Is there a reason behind this silly 21 day requirement, or is it just overcompensation for a poorly planned season in which the B10 canceled for good reason and then just changed course when no one else followed despite the pandemic improving in no way during that stretch of time?

The Badgers literally played their first game on the day with the highest number of COVID cases in the entire pandemic.

I doubt this story gets better for the Badgers. For him to have tested positive over the weekend, he had the virus during Friday's game, and may have been contagious. I'd say there's a greater than 0% chance the game gets cancelled as others potentially test positive this week....

I think you guys are on the same page.

The reason for the longer time off for B1G is their concern on the heart issue so they wanted to monitor it, combined with they wanted time to get people's conditioning back up to speed instead of rushing out there and risking further injury. Supposedly the timing of his would allow him back for Michigan, we'll see.

Where that poor planning comes in is not having any off weeks planned because they started so late. If they'd have started late Sept like SEC they could've planned in 1-2 weeks for nearly inevitable game cancellations.

They have said that nobody tested positive prior to the game on Friday. Could have acquired it celebrating on Friday night after the game or on Saturday, or it could be a false positive.

Two false positives is unlikely, right? Doesn’t it seem far more likely that he tested negative Friday morning as he had been only recently exposed?

I, and probably a lot of people thought about the celebration aspect as well, but exposure to a positive rapid test in less than 48 hours seems unlikely.

I think it takes a few days after you are exposed to the virus for it to show up on a test.

Edit: According to this you can test negative for up to 14 days after exposure but for most people, it's 4 - 5 days.

It sucks, but I'm glad the Big Ten is taking this seriously. I don't know if the majority of the SEC even acknowledges the existence of COVID.

If they have cancelled Nebraska due to reaching some sort of positive test level % that is not acceptable, how can they play the next week, as all of those players will be out for 3 weeks?

Yep. At this point, the season is somewhat in jeopardy for Wisconsin. A team must play 6 games to make the Big Ten Championship, and pending further details, they may be required to cancel 3 of their 8 scheduled games. Not good.

Spitballing, but if no more new positives or at least very few in the next few days that yes those players would be out for 21 days. However, the remaining players could resume and play the games after quarantine now. This cancellation is more about that all these positives just happened so you have to track if there's more before exposing to each other in practice, and another team in a game. Not so much about not having those 6-10 players themselves. But yea, if this keeps growing to say Titans/Cardinals type levels it could ruin the season

Unfortunately, Big Ten rules state that 6 (5%, technically) players with positive tests on a roster = mandatory game cancellation.

Ah, but for how long? yes that cancels this week for sure. But do those positives 'count' for 21 days or what is that window? Hope that makes sense to what I'm asking. They won't be testing positive for 21 days and they won't even be with the team for that time. It might very well be that strict and then yea it is what it is, they're as good as done. and likely they won't be the only team.

Really good questions that I'm not sure even the Big Ten knows the answer to. Apparently the current count is 12 for Wisconsin, just for the record.

To your point, a guy like Mertz probably stops testing positive after a week or two. So, one game cancelled for sure, possibly a 2nd. Whether that stretches to 3 dictates whether Wisconsin can even play for a title....

Time to look for some talented kids around campus and play a game.

It's a combination of team positivity rate and community positivity rate. They weren't forced to; Alvarez and Blank chose to in order to get their arms around it and contain it.

The lackadaisical effort to take this seriously by a significant portion of the Wisconsin general public might be the underlying reason this happened. Hard to expect the team to stay clean when the state is ground zero.
