I'd have to say that Jake Faria goes down as a big swing and a miss as a return for a guy one year removed from being an All Star. He showed nothing.

How many dingers is Jesus gonna hit for the Rays this year?
.

I think Jesus may help the Rays get a new stadium. Some of his ridiculously high flies will either puncture the roof or hit the catwalks, causing a ripple effect in which the entire stadium will come down (Death Star-like)

You miss the point. Jesus is a Marlin now.

deal with david phelps is official. it appears that he has two minor league options remaining, but enough service time to refuse the optional assignment.

to make room on the 40-man roster, deolis guerra has been designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade him, release him, or try to outright him to the minor leagues. if he clears outright waivers, he reserves the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent.

the 40-man roster remains at capacity.

IIRC, they outrighted him to AAA last year, so I believe an outright isn't possible without the chance of losing him to free agency or another team first.

deal with brock holt is official. one year deal with a club option for 2021.

holt has one minor league option remaining, but enough major league service time to refuse the optional assignment.

to make room on the 40-man roster, taylor williams has been designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade or release williams outright, or try to outright him to the minor leagues. if williams goes unclaimed, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment.

the 40-man roster remains at capacity.

corey ray has been optioned. if he spends at least 20 days optioned, he will burn his first option.

trey supak has been optioned. if he spends at least 20 days optioned, he will burn his second option.

there are 38 players on the active roster ahead of the deadline to submit a 26-man roster.

Ray is whiffing his way out of prospect status.

He doesn't need a big year at all. He just needs to show some sort of growth. He already had a big year in 2018 but it didn't really show the skill growth you wanted to see. I would gladly take a .750 OPS but with a 25% strike out rate from Ray, that would mean so much more to me than a .820+ OPS with a 31% K rate.

Ray has to show he can hit AAA pitching this year or become a non-40 man roster candidate. His "big" year he still only hit .239 and whiffed 31% of the time and that was in AA. He stunk last year in AAA (.188/.261 - nearly 40% whiff rate). He got injured, but his lack of contact is alarming. He looked absolutely lost at the plate in spring training games.

a number of players listed below were optioned yesterday. it's unclear at this point how roster construction, requisite stay for optional assignment and major league service time will be affected with the pending deal between mlb and the players association nearing ratification. under the rules in place before spring training was suspended, a player would burn his option if he spent more than 20 days on optional assignment in the season, and said optional assignment was required to last a minimum of 10 days for a position player and a minimum of 15 days for a pitcher (unless replacing an injured player).

j.p. feyereisen (could burn his first of three options this year)
jacob nottingham (could burn his final option this year)
angel perdomo (could burn his first of three options this year)
booby wahl (could burn his second of three options this year)
eric yardley (could burn his first of three options this year)

these moves leave 33 players on the active major league roster.

i missed these optional assignment transactions on 18 march:

david freitas (could burn his final option this year)
ryon healy (could burn his first of three options this year)
mark mathias (could burn his first of three options this year)
ronny rodriguez (could burn his second of three options this year)

these moves, plus the ones mentioned above, leave 29 players on the active major league roster. it's been reported that the season could start with expanded rosters of 29 players.

Wasn't the deal that Eric Lauer & Tyrone Taylor weren't going to be ready for the start of the season? Of course "start of the season" is a mystery now, but I don't foresee Taylor retaining an active MLB roster spot.

What I'm getting at is, I wonder if any of the NRI guys might still be in the mix -- Shelby Miller, Justin Grimm, maybe Mike Morin, Logan Morrison, Jace Peterson. I'd think there may still be a chance with Miller. One of those NRI position players making it would seem to require an injury to a regular roster guy since most everyone left is a regular MLB type -- and mostly just-signed FAs as far as the infield goes.

there are four players on the 40-man roster (all optioned) who have not been invited to work out at miller park as the club finalizes their opening day 30-man roster.

presumably, all four will be part of the 60-man player pool, but that has yet to be announced.

angel perdomo
corey ray
trey supak
tyrone taylor

it is also unclear if and when these players will burn their minor league options. all but taylor were optioned in march, with taylor being optioned just a few days ago. under normal rules, if a player spends more than 20 days optioned, his optioned is burned for that year.

the brewers have added all of their 40-man roster players to the 60-man player pool. they were not required to do so, but would have had to pay their 40-man roster players regardless of player pool status.

i have still yet to see how the burning of an option is handled this year. perdomo and ray had three options remaining entering spring training. supak and taylor had two.
