If they are using a 40 man on Kratz that means they aren’t yet comfortable with Nottingham.

Why would they be comfortable with Nottingham? He hasn't hit much at all above A ball except for 200 or so PA in Colorado Springs, a hitter's haven. Even there his numbers were good, not great. It was a given they'd add a veteran.

We are on the same page bro.

This is simply not true. His TAv in 2016 was .248, in 2017 was .264, and in 2018 was .282. TAv baseline is .260, so he's literally been an above average hitter 2 of his 3 seasons above A ball. wRC+ tells the same story, with marks of 87/103/126 in that same time frame.

TAv and wRC+ are both adjusted for parks effects (TAv more so than wRC+), which wipes out the Colorado Springs hitters haven argument. It is actually possible for players to get better while playing in a bandbox.

Additionally, Nottingham has progressed defensively to the point where he no longer needs his bat to carry him to the big leagues. He can and will provide value defensively.

But he isn't Khrush Davis

Kratz as the back-up? I doubt that...I really do. He is an okay insurance policy at AAA, but lets be honest here, he sucks. Still a guy ho OPS+ 69 and has questionable defense. That offense is fine if he is a stud defensively...but not the way he hits.

They would be way better off signing Maldonado to backup and just pay a few extra millions. No way they allow Kratz to be the secondary guy going into ST.

From everything I've read or heard about him is his defense is well above average. I know he graded out as one of the best pitch framers in the league last season and threw out 30% of base stealers and four passed balls in just under 500 innings.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I mean Stearns acquired Kratz to be a secondary guy on a playoff team that nearly made the World Series. I would say there is at least a decent chance he will be the secondary guy going into Spring Training.

I just hope he goes back to 'secondary' rather than starting 3/4 games like he was at the end of the year. We never got an explanation, maybe Pina still had lingering injury issues so they wanted to keep his games down, idk. I'd guess their plan is to go with him on the MLB barring the addition of a significant catcher like Ramos/Realmuto, etc.

Whatever, I'm not going to stomp my feet about it but yea wish we'd at least attempted to get someone who could hit respectably.

The issue isn't the deal, or the guaranteed amount of $300,000. Also, no issue in having him in the mix in ST. It's just that I'm not real high on using a 40 man spot for him.

Maybe the plan is to roll with Pina/Kratz to start the year and bring Nottingham up after a month or two. I guess worse case, if they come across another catcher who is better they can dfa Kratz and see if he stays with the org in AAA.

Couldn't agree more. I think guys like him are fairly easy to get and he was probably more interested in being here than anywhere else. It's more the timing of it than anything. Why not let him look for a major league deal somewhere and come back on a minor league deal if or, more likely, when he can't get one. We could even let him know we would sign him to one if there was nothing out there for him so he'd know there was a place for him here.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

He's been traded to San Francisco for Minor-league SS CJ Hinujosa.

Well, he certainly left his mark, especially for being a 38-year old, mid season pickup.

Best of luck to Erik in San Francisco. Very easy guy to root for and I'm glad he's getting an opportunity to continue his career.

What a great pickup by stearns, hate to lose a leader and great clubhouse guy like Eric. Had to happen though.

Looks like they at least got an equivalent return in Hinojosa. They gave up IF Wendell Rijo to get Kratz last season, and CJ looks to be equal or better than him.

Thanks for your time MVK.

I still remember him turning around and thanking the home plate ump after the final out vs the Rockies. Yelling “Thank you Teddy, Bless You”. Then celebrating with Hader. Class act, wish him the best of luck in SF

Hinojosa was drafted by the Astros back in 2012 so I'm guessing Stearns liked Hinojosa.

Seems like a pretty solid return for Kratz.

The NLDS will never be forgotten.

Also, his game-tying single against Pittsburgh in the 15th.
