I would agree that Braun hasn't been ice cold but if you take a snap shot of the team today...

Cain Yelich Grandal Moose Hiura Thames Braun Arcia should be the lineup... ducks

I'm fine with that, but that's more because it creates a very nice R/L/S balance to the order and because Moose, and Hiura are hitting well right now than it does to do with Braun hitting poorly. Could switch Braun and Hiura and that would be fine too, as a suspect pitchers will adjust to Hiura at some point (then hopefully he adjusts right back).

Until Thames hit a couple homers this series he's shown no power this year, nor much quality contact either.

Aguilar's line since April 29th is .266/.388/.484

Thames' line since April 29th (before today) is .209/.376/.299

I like the Thames/Aguilar platoon, but perhaps they should be leading off until they find some power?

Moose
Braun/Cain/Gamel
Braun/Cain/Gamel

[laughing]

I'm not sure either, but it's the lineup thread and I'm in a posting mood and it actually makes sense right now... I don't really think it SHOULD be done, but it would be interesting.

I have a strange feeling that some max predictive runs software would actually spit out this lineup.

I'd go with:

cf: Cain
2b: Hiura
rf: Yelich
c: Grandal
3b: Moustakas
lf: Braun
1b: Thames/Aguilar
ss: Arcia

bench: Pina, Thames/Aguilar, Shaw, Perez, Gamel

The conversation about moving arcia up in the order needs to start, and so I will start it. Over his last 28 days, he is hitting .321/.409/.519. The issue as I see it, is that he has earned a spot higher up on the order, but there's not much room for him to fit in there. Yelich, moose(assuming he doesn't end up on the IL), and Grandal are pretty much locked into the 2, 4, and 5 spots respectively and huira is thriving in the 6 spot. The 3 hole doesn't really fit him and frankly when braun is hot he belongs there. Braun is ice cold right now and I would be interested in dropping cain to the 3 hole with arcia leading off, but I just don't see braun being dropped in the order. The 7 spot would be ok, but I don't see it as much of a change to be worth risking rocking the boat. So that would leave moving him down to the 9 spot with the pitcher 8. I think this would be the move the has the best chance of actually happening that would be the greatest benefit. Try to get some more runners on base for yelich.

Ultimately I expect nothing to happen, but it would be nice to benefit more from what I think is arcia finding it.

He completely deserves it but other than batting 1b 8th, what do you do? I can't see his hitting type batting 1st (yet) despite the fact that he's been on at the rate you'd like to see. After that, its hard to move him up in a lineup that can go, Yelich Hiura Moose Braun Grandal. Thames as an 850 OPS shouldn't bat below him. Aguilar is another story.

I can't see Cain jumping out of the 1 spot yet. On the season wide look, Hiura and Arcia are only .018 OBP higher. Cain's been rough this year but I don't think its time yet. Arcia isn't an 8 hitter but this lineup is loaded.

What's exciting is if he can keep around 340-345 OBP there's a future where Arcia Yelich Hiura are hitting 1-2-3 if Cain's defense needs to be hidden further down the order.

Arcia Yelich Hiura Moose Grandal Shaw Cain Gamel would be fun in 2021 and 2022.

Arcia batting top 3?

Right now he would be a better option than Cain. We will see if he sustains this or not.

1. I highly doubt the Grandal leading off thing is a long-term solution.

2. Aguilar is finally starting to swing it better. Hopefully he gets to the point of being a productive hitter again.

[laughing] Why in the hell would Cain be batting 3rd? Especially against RHP where he’s been horrendous. And then he bumps to 9th against the hand he’s actually good at hitting against? Yeeezus.

Cain, When right, should leadoff.

Aguilar is swinging it better, hopefully the power is next.

That's probably what they will do... Arcia and Cain/Gamel could swap. They are too nostalgic about Braun. I'd prefer the 900+ OPS guys 2-3-4 but what can you do. This is the year we squeak ourselves out of the playoffs before 2020 is our year. Follow the Astros.

Oxy's 1b lead off gains more traction all the time too but then Braun would sit 3 hole ahead of Moose Grandal Hiura Which is dumb.

I'd probably put Hiura 3rd and Braun 5th on the simple basis that I expect Hiura to outhit Braun overall for the remainder of 2018. But I agree with splitting up the lefties and if you're a believer that it's better not to put pressure on rookies by batting them that high, it works.

Cain has been pretty consistent the last 6 or so years of being around 60 points better in OBP than BA. That is right in line with this year as well. Last year was a career year of sorts for him, having a 32 point better OBP than his next closest year. He hasn’t been as terrible as some say, but not the level we saw so often last year. OPS is down but untimely batting lead off we need him on base. Hopefully the start of the 2nd half is a sign that things are coming along!
