Hiura was swinging at pitches in the zone today, so I'm not at all concerned about his 4 K performance because that shows it wasn't a plate discipline issue and we already know he has elite bat-on-ball skills. He's probably still jittery from the call-up.

Do we know his bat to ball skills are elite if he's missing pitches in the zone?

Hiura has 5 whiffs in 12 ABs. That is bothersome. He has to show something today and tomorrow to remain in the big leagues. I think another 4 K day gets him sent down and either Dubon or Saladino comes up.

It's hard to call a 12 AB sample size of anything bothersome.

With that being said, he hasn't even likely hit the Super 2 cutoff this year, so he does need to give them a reason to keep him up, or he'll be going back down. So while I doubt a bad day today gets him sent back down, he's probably not going to get an exceptionally long leash to contribute.

Hiura has a bright future but he should go back to AAA when Shaw comes back. We don't want to ruin his confidence... [sad]

And just when people call for him to be sent back to the minors he hits his first dinger. Baseball gods are like that.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Congrats on #1 and surviving on the road. Will be fun to see him in front of the home crowd this week.

Did it seem like Hiura was hitting with the bases loaded every time he was coming up? I think it is safe to say he will probably only get better from where he is at. .250/.333/.708 Maybe the obp will go down if he doesn't get hit by a pitch every three games.

I'm on board with leaving him with the big league club long term. He appears to be an asset to the lineup and doesn't have anything left to prove in the minors IMO.

I believe they will demote Hiura once Shaw is ready to come back, don't think they will option Shaw quite yet and won't DFA Perez this year.

It's also possible that with the off days in the schedule over the next month, they may go down to a 12-man pitching staff. That would enable them to carry Shaw without sending a bat down.

I pointed it out in the pitching thread, but if the Brewers decide to put Nelson in the rotation they could move Chase to the bullpen now, and start Woody in his spot on Saturday (Would still start on an extra days rest), and activate Jimmy on the 30th to start. What this would mean for Hiura is that if they send down a pitcher (I would assume Houser), they could activate Shaw on Friday, keep both Hiura and Shaw on the roster until then, and do so while still maintaining an 8-man bullpen. At least gives them some extra time to decide what to do, to see if Shaw looks any better, if Hiura hits well enough to make him impossible to send down, if they can keep running with a 12-man staff for a while etc.

Personally I hope he stays with the major league club now that he's up. The sooner he gets regular playing time in the majors, the sooner he can adapt to major league hitting and contribute to the team. Has to happen at some point, might as well be now. Depending on who stays in the bullpen, they should have enough multi-inning arms that if used properly it would allow a 12-man pitching staff for a while if the rotation is stable. Having one of Shaw/Moose/Hiura, one of Braun/Gamel/Cain/Yelich and either Thames or Aguilar ready of the bench every day would be quite potent.

My thoughts are that when Shaw rejoins the team, Hiura is optioned for a small period of time to get behind that Super 2 status. Maybe the team understands he's a slow starter at every level and the taste he's getting now is expected to be below expectations. Making that rewind the clock seem appropriate. See him smash AAA hopefully at a better production than prior to his call up and ne recalled to terrorize ML pitching from that point on.

I'm guessing that the Brewers don't even know what they will do yet. Too many factors in play. Will Shaw get healthy quickly? Will Shaw hit on his rehab stint? Will Hiura perform in that time period? Will there be other injuries between now and the time for the decision? Just way too many moving pieces to say what should or will happen. Some went from "he's the next Ryan Braun" to send him back down in the matter of a few at-bats. You just cannot have a bipolar view of players all the time. Let them go at it for a while and then form a reasonable opinion on what should or should not happen with a player.

Yup. and another injury could easily happen between now and then. My guess is they do plan on Shaw playing in AAA for a bit after he's 'healthy' so this will be somewhat dependant on him doing well there. So I'm just saying that after the 10 days there's likely to be more time to wait and see what happens.

As I have mentioned before you can't get rid of Perez. He is the back up for the infield and most notably at SS. Get rid of him and Arcia is literally the only person to man SS. You would have to replace him with a SS and Hiura isn't that nor is Shaw.

We have another Perez in Dubon waiting in AAA. Not as versatile, but with Gamel/Thames, Moose/Shaw Dubon's ability at SS or 2b makes Perez a target to be traded sooner than later.

My guess is that happens next year with Dubon or Saladino when Perez is even more costly but safe this year.

That doesn't help the problem at all. Go ahead and swap Perez for Dubon...okay, now who are you dropping to make room for Shaw? Nope, can't be Dubon because once again someone has to back up SS. What I am saying is that roster spot is concrete. Perez, Dubon, Yuni...doesn't matter. No one in that roster spot can be subtracted to keep Shaw/Hiura/Thames on the same roster.

Either Hiura goes or Thames goes. There quite literally is no other possible option when Shaw comes back with the current roster.

Yes there is ... but it means dropping a reliever and going with a bigger bench and 12 man pitching staff.

Not an option. Why would they do that? So Shaw or Hiura can rot on the bench? So Thames can get a one AB a week?

They aren't going to short their pitching staff. They could do it, but they won't...would be quite shocking and honestly wouldn't make much sense.

I wouldn't say it isn't an option. If they were going to do it, the next month of so of games with built-in off days every week would be the time to do it. Plus they are filling the staff with pitchers capable of throwing multiple innings, which will especially be true once Nelson is activated. It may not be probable, as Counsell has shown an affinity for a 13-man pitching staff, but it is certainly possible.
