With the brewers currently holding the wildcard I was thinking who in the world are the brewers going to pitch in this game if need be? If Woodruff wasn't hurt he would be the choice if available but assuming he isn't? We all want this team to make it but realistically all this work for one game on the road is going to be very tough. I'm guessing Gio just for veteran guile?

If you had to do it today. IDK, probably Chase. BUt with two months to go a ton is going to change. Who knows what will happen. I'd cross my fingers Woodruff comes back strong to help the cause of even making it and then can pitch that game

I would guess Gio or Chase, pulled for Hader at the first sign of trouble and hopefully 3 innings out of him. Much like Game 7.

The Brewers almost certainly aren't going to have the luxury of "deciding" who to pitch that game. It's going to come down to however the rotation shakes out to end the season.

Why shouldn’t Woodruff be available? That would be just short of 10 weeks from his injury, thought it was a 6 week injury heal?

Probably, but whoever it is, I would be pretty surprised if they get more than 3 innings, unless the guy is straight dealing.

With 3 teams a half a game behind the Brewers and a few not much further behind than that, there’s not much point speculating on this.

Even if they get there, they will probably need to use every arm available just to qualify. They won’t have the luxury of saving a pitcher for the wild card game.

Generally I hate the idea of being in the WC game but if this team can scrap their way into the game it would be kind of fun. Would love to play the Nats on the road actually and have a chance to add to their postseason misery...

I'm really wondering how it shakes out if 3 teams are tied for the 2nd wildcard (like right now)..
Is it some sort of round robin to determine the team that then faces the #1 WC ??

Its worth watching...

We've had two games versus Washington's aces so far...

Scherzer vs Jhoulys
Strasburger vs Houser

...granted we were at home, but we won 5-3 & 6-0.

Our two games against the Mets aces, both on the road, we faced DeGrom with Chase on the bump, won 10-2. Beat Thor 8-6 with Woody pitching.

In one game, anything can happen. Sure if we're on the road & whoever we're playing has an ace on the hill while we have post-injury Woodruff or Chase/Gio or Lyles who we maybe never should have let go in the first place & probably isn't a splashy enough acquisition to help us get a postseason berth anyways so why are we even talking about it or a bullpen game or whatever, we'll be the underdogs...

...but we're Milwaukee Brewers fans. We're always the underdogs. Even in 2011/2018, when we won thee most games in the NL, we were the underdogs. Even after we finally win a World Series at some indeterminate point in the future, we'll still be the underdogs.

Right now WAS, NYM, PHI, CHI, STL, MIL & ARI are all between 59-63 wins, the dream scenario is they all end up with identical win totals.

You would need two tiebreaker games each to determine the East/Central Champs. Then of the remaining five teams there would need to be three tiebreaker games to determine the two Wild Cards, then you could have the actual Wild Card game...like a week after the season.

Give me the most baseball.

Yes, a 3 or more team tie for the last wild card spot results in a round robin of sorts.

It would almost require a neutral site(s) for everything

That's not what will happen though. There's coin flips to determine home field in those situations. MLB will do a release in a couple weeks regarding all the potential teams involved and who will play who and where.

Looking at it geographically, Arizona is the only outlier being so far west.

I think another good question is which team you would prefer to play in the Wild Card game?

I would rank the possibilities as follows (in order of most preferred opponent to least preferred)...

1) Phillies (likely starter: RHP Aaron Nola)
2) Cardinals (likely starter: RHP Miles Mikolas)
3) Diamondbacks (likely starter: LHP Robbie Ray)
4) Mets (likely starter: RHP Jacob deGrom)
5) Cubs (likely starter: Anybody’s guess what Maddon would do against the Brewers in a WC game)
6) Nationals (likely starter: RHP Max Scherzer)

Definitely not the Cubs. Definitely not the Mets or Nats. Give me Phillies or Cards. Any lefty we are toast.

Lets look at it this way... IF the Brewers have to play multiple wild card games, is that an advantage or disadvantage for them??
I would think the Crew is at a large disadvantage in that situation

BTW - The Nationals end the regular season at home vs Cleveland. That might be an interesting 3 game set for a couple of reasons (AL Central race/ NL Wildcard races)..

100%, doubt that the brewers are going to have the luxury of stacking their rotation. Probably will have to pull out all of the stops the last few days to get in, if they are so fortunate to be in that position (knocking on wood as I type)

I just know the Nationals will choke in the WC game so that's who I want to play.
