LOl what else do you expect him to say?? he's not going to come out and fully admit they are cutting payroll...they can just not sign FA's and give the standard "we tried"(like they did with Grandal line) and some of you incredibly guillable, DS slobbering fans would believe it. I don't get it. Were you all Ted Thompson fans too?? Where did his being frugal leave the franchise??

Besides what does DS define as being "competitive"?? Competing for a playoff berth, world series, just not being terrible??

Yes, that's it. Won 90+ games and made ths playoffs the last two years, but to David Stearns, being competitive just means not being terrible. Win 75 games, call it good.

Goodness gracious man. Is there any part about being a Milwaukee Brewer fan that you actually enjoy?

I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if they were trying to go below the $120 million opening day payroll they had last year, but they are not cutting payroll down to $60 million the year after a playoffs appearance and in Yelich's prime [laughing]

So they are cutting payroll then, right?? Cutting payroll, is cutting payroll. Instead in Yelich's prime you should be increasing it substantially.

They arguably stretched the payroll to an unsustainable high for one season because the opportunities to sign Grandal and Moustakas came about late. Given the normal connotations of "cutting payroll" I don't think if's fair to say that's what they are doing if they open 2020 below that mark (even assuming that's what they are doing).

Your takes were terrible at the trade deadline, and you turned out to be 100% wrong then. Yet here you are again, floating this kind of utter crap out there. Grow up.

Payroll is fluid every year, it isn't linear. You don't automatically just increase payroll every year. That's just spending for the sake of spending. You spend when the right deals present itself like with Moose and Grandal last year and manage your resources wisely so that you can afford to make those deals when you need to.

Say things like this and you should be willing to leave the forum if 2020 payroll winds up meeting or exceeding last season. C'mon we gotta be better than this here. It's getting out of hand. The forum needs a banner showing how many days are left before spring training.

Now you’re just trolling. You get it straight from the man himself to not panic and yet, here you are using Bob N. to try to make a case for Stearns not doing his job. Time to put your big boy pants on and relax a bit and let the off season play out.

It's the exact same thing as the last offseason. And the last trade deadline. And the ones before that. Right down to the Ted Thompson comparison. Soon we'll have the reminiscing about Doug Melvin, the "scared money don't make money", and multiple posts about how every prospect should be traded because he's too ambitious to sit on his hands like Stearns, no prospect is guaranteed, and how the competitive window is over because we didn't sign X player.

This particular poster definitely has a specific bag of tricks that he draws from.

Stearns: "We intend on being competitive once again next year. We think we have a quality team and will continue to complement and add to that team throughout the rest of the offseason. We've got a lot of offseason left."

TIL if your payroll doesn't rise at least 5% a year you're cutting payroll.

To a lot of you it won't matter who they sign, as long as they get them cheap or at a "reasonable" price, it will be a good deal and will help the team, right?? SMH...the #1 thing I have never been able to figure out with sports fans, is why they care so much how someone else spends THEIR own money.

You guys would think bringing in Logan Forsythe to play 1st for a year and Todd Frazier to play 3rd for a year would actually be good moves if they were cheap 1 year deals, only they wouldn't really replace any of what they are losing. But, hey, if it's a bargain, must be a good move, right?? Has no one ever heard of getting what you pay for??

Wow, you are piling up the hot takes tonight.

Absolutely none of this is correct. Or even coherent.

You all sound like a bunch of blow-hards!

Original poster, yeah we know all about him and his shenanigans, but those who are acting like you know for 100% sure what is going to happen with payroll, signings, etc. are no better.

Let's just see what happens...

I could see this hand wringing if the talk of what could still come kept amounting to nothing year after year. But since Stearns became GM, he's never sat on his hands even once. The past two offseasons have been highlighted by the Yelich/Cain acquistions and the Moustakas and Grandal signings among other things. Heck they've already made a rather significant trade THIS offseason. Do the "sky is falling" people enjoy winding up with egg on their faces year after year?

The absolute dumbest thing they could have done was spend a ton of $$$ on 4-year deals to keep a team together that barely made the playoffs last year. All we know right now is that they didn't do that.

Except in almost any huge FA contract you literally do not get what you pay for....

Your next post should be about the Packers giving a record FA deal to a running back. Similar success rates lately.

You're exactly right, because if your honest, what of those things AREN'T true?? You may not like them, or want to hear them, or want to acknowledge how factual those things are, but they are.

So for all of you saying..."there's a lot of off season left yet, relax"...sure there is, but why does he have to wait all off season?? He could be signing guys now just as easily right?? Orrrrr maybe he waits purposely, thinking prices will come down, and then he can get players at "walmart prices". That is EXACTLY why they wait, and in the process, because they are waiting to get players at "their" price, other players that would be coups they maybe could have by spending a bit more, are signing other places. They wait for bargains, plain and simple. No one can spin it any other way. Just because they are a bargain, doesn't mean they will be a substantial help to the ball club, right??
