I imagine this is a minors deal, but considering the lack of depth we have at 1B and the corner OF in the system, it probably makes sense.

He hit 38 HR’s in 2017. Wonder what’s been going on with him since? Injuries?

So is Stearns cornering the market on players rebounding from hip surgery? Signed Healy; now signed Morrison. Anyone else to take a flyer on?

It's a flyer on a veteran LH bat who hit 38 HRs for the Rays a couple years ago. I don't see anyone calling it a joke. I mean, it's likely a minors deal, so what's the harm?

Smoak is a noticeably better hitter against righties than lefties (.840 OPS v RHP / .768 v LHP from 2017-2019). Morrison's splits over the same time period are similar, so tough to imagine there could be any sort of a platoon between the two.

Likely Morrison ends up in AAA; assuming the contract is reasonable, hard to see any real downside here.

Hard to overly dislike a minor league deal, but Morrison has had about one good(not great) 3 month stretch for his entire career. I'd rather we use minor league deals on guys with some upside.

This still makes more sense than the Brett Anderson signing.

Kudos to Uwbadgers442 who told us the Brewers wanted to sign Smoak and Morrison way back on November 28th.

Here are the posts: Link #1 and Link #2.

I doubted the report at the time, and it turns out I was very much wrong.

Please stop bringing up Brett Anderson in multiple threads. Thanks.

Morrison had a great 2017 for Tampa in 2017. He started incredibly slowly with MN in 2018 and never got untracked (think: Travis Shaw levels of bad in 2019) then eventually got injured and never played for the rest of the year. That he signed anywhere last year after his 2018 amazed me. That anyone still thinks he might amount to something -- even Stearns -- is beyond me.

In 2018, Morrison hit .186 for MN in 95 games (359 PAs) w/ 15 HRs, 39 RBIs, a .276 OBP, and a .644 OPS.

His 2019 in the majors was no better, albeit in a puny sample size (38 PAs).

Of course, Gabe Kapler's unbelievably good year in MIL came out of nowhere. A return to any sort of decent form by Morrison would be that level of unexpected results -- and I'd be one of many happy about it as a result. In the meantime, the way he started in MIN in 2018 and the fact that he's not played any better in the bigs since then has my expectations at about zero.

includes an invite to big league camp.

morrison becomes the fifth non-roster invitee to spring training.

he appears to have all three minor league options intact, but has enough service time to refuse the optional assignment.

For some reason I thought LoMo had retired from MLB...I guess that won't be happening for a few more months.
