includes an invite to big league camp.

morrison becomes the fifth non-roster invitee to spring training.

he appears to have all three minor league options intact, but has enough service time to refuse the optional assignment.

Since he signed a minor league contract and he's not on the 40-man roster, I don't think it counts as an option if they don't keep him up after spring training. It's probably in his contract where he can take a major league offer from another team if the Brewers want to make that move though.

It's the definition of non-roster.... Since it's a minor league deal with a non-roster invite, he's in big-league camp with no promise of a 40-man spot let alone an Opening Day spot.... You can't burn an option when you're not on the 40-man roster.

I was thinking Morrison was much more DH than 1B but his 1B metrics make him look about average defensively. But man has he been pitiful with the bat the last two years.

any player that finishes the previous season on the major league roster and signs a minor league contract is entitled to an opt-out date towards the end of spring training. the player can waive that opt-out clause, or can postpone it, or can demand a second opt-out date (usually in june).

This still makes more sense than the Brett Anderson signing.

Haha, only if you want us to have the league’s crumbiest rotation. In reality, this signing is very smart, just like the extremely team-friendly Anderson contract

Glad I don’t have to wait for another signing as big as this was.

Unbelievable that anyone could possibly complain about having a guy with Morrison's track record as pure minor league depth. If Smoak and/or Braun gets injured at some point during the season, who do you want filling his spot on the roster and getting starts at 1B, David Freitas??

Even when he slumped, Morrison took walks and has plenty of power.

The big question is how well he makes contact.

And as a lefty, Miller Park should be pretty friendly for him. Not a bad depth signing.

Lomo doesn't have a track record of being the best clubhouse guy. It's like the brewers are forgetting what made them special. Thames for Lomo is a step back in terms of personality. Maybe he never makes it to Miller Park. Hope this is the case.

Makes for a fortified L/R platoon in AAA of Healy and LoMo. That is all.

Would that become HeaMo or LoLy?

The Brewers might not have great quality of first base prospects, but they definitely have quantity at the upper levels. If Healy starts in AAA I count five first basemen at AA and AAA.

FWIW - He had a 1.009 OPS in AAA last year in 61 games.

With the juiced ball, pitching quality, defense and some of the parks in AAA it’s really hard to take AAA production at face value last year. Nonetheless this is a perfectly fine depth signing.

Yeah, he could actually factor in if there's an injury to Braun or Smoak. My guess is he's got an opt out around June 1st.

Kudos to Uwbadgers442 who told us the Brewers wanted to sign Smoak and Morrison way back on November 28th.

Here are the posts: Link #1 and Link #2.

I doubted the report at the time, and it turns out I was very much wrong.

Thank you for this. I love going back and reading people openly ridicule something someone says only to see it happen 6 weeks later.

Why? Are you in favor of some kind of code of silence thing?

Nope. More truth is going to come out and many, many more teams will be indicted. So there is going to be many who look foolish after the fact.
