April 15 - Phillies 4, Brewers 3 (10 innings)

Urias and Sogard have once again been flipped in the primary lineup, so now Urias is #2 and Sogard is #8. A bit surprising as Urias has been pretty bad lately, and after today's game he is down to a .132/.283/.263/.546 slash line.

This game was all about Bryce Harper and Justin Smoak. Each player had a 2-run home run and a solo home run. The quad injury that Smoak suffered yesterday was not a problem in this game. Smoak now leads the Brewers in both OBP and SLG. His slash line is up to .294/.410/.627/1.037.

The Phillies loaded the bases in the first off Houser but he was able to wiggle out of it without surrendering a run. He cruised through the next three innings but then gave up a 3-spot in the fifth inning. Lindblom gave up a home run to Harper in the 10th to take the loss. Other than that, it was an impressive bullpen performance for the Brewers, which is encouraging because they had a truly awful stretch about a week ago.

Brewers might have some good luck in this sim, as the rest of the division is looking bad. Only 10% of the way through the season, but there is little doubt to this point that the NL Central is the worst division in baseball.

April 16- Brewers 7, Phillies 5 (12 innings)

Arcia with a pinch-hit 2-run home run in the bottom of the 12th to win it for Milwaukee. It's not like Arcia is hitting .300, but he's been clutch, clutch, clutch so far in this sim. Dare I say, if this was really happening, the majority of Brewer fans would be demanding Arcia be put back in the starting lineup and Urias sent back to AAA for more seasoning.

Note that there were 44 strikeouts + walks in this game which was very noticeable when watching the sim.

On other league news, Astro outfielder George Springer broke an ankle and will be out 4-5 months.

Looks like we should have traded Corbin Burnes.

Here is what happened in the 7th inning of the 4-16 game:

Start of 7th inning
Peralta pitching
Knapp base on balls
Bruce base on balls

Burnes comes in (0 outs, runners on 1st and 2nd)
Segura strikes out swinging
Hoskins base on balls
Harper singles, Knapp scores

Phelps comes in (1 out, bases loaded)
Gregorius doubles, Bruce, Hoskins and Harper all score

So Burnes has the ugly 7.11 ERA (and he's not pitched well), but Phelps was really the bullpen goat of the game. Phelps 2.08 ERA is very misleading...his WHIP is 1.85 and he has allowed 9 of 12 inherited runners to score.

April 17 - Mets 2, Brewers 1

Former first round pick David Peterson makes his major league debut and baffles Brewer hitters for 6 1/3 innings. Brewers only run comes on a little Cain squib hit in front of the plate which the catcher proceeded to field and then throw into right field, a two base error that put Cain at 2B. He eventually scored on a Yelich single. A great start by Woodruff wasted.

April 18 - Mets 5, Brewers 3

Now at 12-9, the Brewers hold a 1 1/2 game lead over the Cubs and Cardinals (both at 10-10).

Big news is that Corey Knebel started his rehab assignment today. Probably will see him pretty quick as the bullpen needs some help (12th in the NL in ERA).

Claudio blew today's game. Came in to the game with 1 out, runners on first and second and allowed both those runners to score and then one more that he put on base. Suter's first inning woes continue. He's allowed 15 runs total so far, but 9 of those have come in the first inning. Phelps had allowed 75% of his inherited runners to score, but today he came into the 6th with 2 outs, 2 on and got the final out without allowing a run. Another frequent target of my displeasure, Freitas, had a run scoring single in the second and a run scoring double in the sixth and was the best offensive player for the Brewers. Garcia drew his first walk of the season...in his 79th plate appearance.

In other league news, Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu tore a hamstring and will miss 3 months.

April 19 - Brewers 2, Mets 0

Roster move before the game. Brock Holt activated from the DL, Orlando Arcia optioned to AAA. I was really hoping Urias would have been the one sent out as Arcia has delivered some big hits and Urias has been a black hole offensively.

Knebel threw 1 inning for San Antonio. 18 pitches, 1 hit allowed, 1 strikeout. For some reason it's listing his rehab time left as only being 3 days, so he should be back on the Brewer's roster by midweek.

As far as today's game, Anderson was effectively wild which caused his pitch count to rise and led to an early exit. Chris Lee came in with 2 outs and the bases loaded, and was able to strike out Amed Rosario to end the threat. Lee is looking like a real find.

Brewer bats didn't do much again today. Sogard led off the fifth with a single, Lee bunted him to second, he advanced to third on a Cain single and then scored on a Holt ground out. Cain hit a solo home run off of Dellin Betances in the 8th inning.

April 21 - Brewers 5, Pirates 2

David Phelps was injured while pitching in this game. Further information is still pending.

Houser needed a good start against a bad offensive team in Pittsburgh (tied for 13th in the NL in runs scored) and had mixed results. Only allowed 2 runs, but also gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings and just can't seem to get on track.

And there was some bizarre use of the bullpen in the 9th inning, which may have been explainable if Hader was tired.....but following an off-day?

On the plus side, Urias with a 2-hit game that was badly needed and Narvaez and Yelich both with home runs.

April 22 - Brewers 8, Pirates 6

Brewers go to 15-9, Cubs lose and the Cardinals have now dropped 3 straight. Brewers are 2 1/2 games ahead of the Cubs, 4 games ahead of the Cardinals and 5 games ahead of the Reds who have won 3 in a row.

Pirates really look dreadful. They took a 3 run lead in the first inning as Peralta really struggled out of the gate and by the fourth inning that three run lead had turned into a three run deficit. Great offensive performance by the Brewers "non-impact" hitters. 8 runs on the board in a game where Cain, Hiura and Yelich went a combined 0/12 with two walks (both by Cain). Peralta settled down after inning one but again ran up a high pitch count and was yanked after just 4 1/3 innings. Hader was money in the ninth inning.

April 23 - Brewers 7, Pirates 3

Significant roster moves before today's game-
Brett Anderson designated for assignment and placed on waivers.
David Phelps is put on the disabled list. Diagnosis is a dead arm with an injury time of 2 weeks.
Corey Knebel finishes his rehab assignment and is placed on the 26-man roster.
J.P. Feyereisen is recalled from the minors.

Josh Lindblom has been placed in the starting rotation.

The Cubs lost again, so the Brewer lead in the Central is up to 3 1/2 games.

Brewers win another game against the Pirates. Again the big dogs in the lineup did not do much (Cain/Hiura/Yelich a combined 2/13 with 1 walk), but big performances from Sogard, Urias and Braun and Pina both started and each had 2 hits. Woodruff looked a big shaky in this game, but was still good enough to get the job done.

April 24 - Rockies 8, Brewers 3

Roster move before the game-
JP Feyereisen optioned to AAA
Drew Rasmussen is added to the 26-man roster

Since there has been so many pitching staff changes recently, here is how the staff currently shapes up:
Starters = Brandon Woodruff, Brent Suter, Adrian Houser, Freddy Peralta, Josh Lindblom
Bullpen = Josh Hader (closer), Corey Knebel (setup), Corbin Burnes (setup), Devin Williams (middle), Ray Black (middle), Alex Claudio (middle), Chris Lee (long), Drew Rasmussen (long)
David Phelps on the DL. Brett Anderson is on waivers.

Rasmussen makes his MLB debut and pitches a scoreless 8th inning in a lopsided loss. The game was still within reach heading into the bottom of the 7th, but Devin Williams had an awful performance and put the game out of reach. Williams is maintaining a good FIP (3.60) due to a ridiculous K rate (17.4 K/9), but his ERA (8.71) and WHIP (1.74) indicate he might be ready for a trip to the minors. Charlie Blackmon was a stud in this game, bashing 2 home runs, scoring 3 runs and knocking in 4. Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman was injured and left the game in the sixth inning, no word on how much time he will miss.

April 25 - Brewers 11, Rockies 4

Interesting that this would have been Lindblom's turn in the rotation, but he had thrown 53 pitches on the 22nd, so the Brewers ended up skipping him and going with a bullpen game. So all 8 Brewer relievers appeared in this game which is a bit of a concern as Houser is scheduled for tomorrow and Houser (with a poor performance so far) + a used up bullpen + Coors Field looks like it could be trouble.

Drew Rasmussen picks up his first MLB win.

Keston Hiura with a 3 hit, 3 runs scored, 4 RBI performance.

The bad news is that Justin Smoak was injured and it's listed as an upper body injury, so not related to the quad problem he's also dealing with. Hopefully this will not keep him out of action as he is #1 on the team in OPS among qualifiers (.973), tied for the team lead in doubles (8) and tied for the team lead in home runs (5).

Brewers are now 17-10. They have a 3 1/2 game lead over the Cubs. Their winning percentage (.630) is tied for 3rd best in the NL with the Phillies, only trailing the Padres (.692) and Dodgers (.667). The Yankees have the best record in baseball at an amazing 22-6 (.786).

April 26 - Brewers 9, Rockies 7

Brewers now up to an impressive 18-10.

Roster move made-
Justin Smoak is placed on the disabled list
Logan Morrison is placed on the 26-man roster

Bad news on Smoak. Out three weeks with an oblique strain. Big blow to the Brewer lineup.

Morrison had slashed .545/.615/1.455/2.070 in AAA but in a very small number of at-bats. He is just coming off a hamstring injury and had only played in games on the 9th, 24th and 25th. Braun fans will be disappointed to hear that Morrison has been placed into the starting lineup, although Braun will start 50% of the games when facing left-handed pitching.

Houser blasted again and now we are six starts in and he currently has an 8.04 ERA, 6.71 FIP, 1.89 WHIP and is definitely a candidate for a move to the bullpen. Brewer pitching got lots of help as the Rockies made four outs on the bases. Pina throws out two runners trying to steal second, picks another runner off 1B and Cain throws out a runner at the plate. Pina also with three hits. Sogard named player of the game with another big performance. Drew Rasmussen picks up his second win in as many days.

April 27 - Off

One huge piece of news on the minor league front. The Brewers sign 16-year old left handed pitcher Alex Pistoni out of Venezuela. He is 6-1, 170 pounds. Throws a fastball, splitter and circle change with 88-90 MPH fastball velocity. He unseats Turang as the Brewers #1 prospect and debuts on the Top 100 prospect list at #40.

Brewers 26-man roster-
Starting pitchers - Brandon Woodruff, Brent Suter, Freddy Peralta, Adrian Houser, Josh Lindblom
Relief pitchers - Josh Hader (closer), Corey Knebel (setup), Corbin Burnes (setup), Devin Williams (middle), Ray Black (middle), Alex Claudio (middle), Chris Lee (long), Drew Rasmussen (long)
Catchers - Omar Narvaez, Manny Pina
Infielders - Logan Morrison, Keston Hiura, Luis Urias, Eric Sogard, Brock Holt, Jedd Gyorko
Outfielders - Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain, Avisail Garcia, Ryan Braun, Ben Gamel

Disabled list - IF-Justin Smoak (4 weeks), RP-David Phelps (10 days)

Other players on 40-man roster-
Relief pitcher - J.P. Feyereisen
Catcher - David Freitas
Infielders - Ryon Healy, Orlando Arcia, Ronny Rodriguez
Outfielder - Tyrone Taylor
40-man roster currently stands at 34 players.

Brett Anderson has cleared waivers and is still on the DFA list.

April 28 - Nationals 7, Brewers 1

Joe Ross headed into this game with an 11.12 ERA and 2.47 WHIP but had no problems with the Brewer hitters. Brewers got their only run when Logan Morrison was hit by a pitch and then scored on a Luis Urias double.

Brewers still had a chance heading into the ninth inning, but poor performances by Corey Knebel and Drew Rasmussen ended any chance the Brewers had. With Knebel pitching, Trea Turner led off the inning with a triple, Juan Soto was intentionally walked, Eric Thames struck out...Drew Rasmussen then came into the ballgame, walked Asdrubal Cabrera and then gave up a grand slam home run to Victor Robles. The day after the off-day and Counsell goes through 7 relievers. Once again, Peralta has trouble with walks, ends up with a high pitch count and doesn't go very deep in the game.

Thames gets a golden sombrero, but so far he's been very good for the Nationals. Slash line following today's game is a pretty impressive .283/.353/.576/.929 with 6 HR.

Tomorrow's pitching match up is Josh Lindblom, making his first start for the Brewers, and Anibal Sanchez. The Nationals have been using Sanchez as a follower, so there is a good chance a reliever will start this ballgame and Sanchez will enter the game in the second inning.

In other league news, Red Sox starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez has been placed on the DL with ulnar nerve entrapment. He is scheduled to miss four months.

April 29 - Nationals 9, Brewers 6

The pitching matchup that I mentioned yesterday never happened. Both Lindblom and Sanchez were skipped, resulting in a premier type matchup of Woodruff and Scherzer but only half that equation delivered.

Woodruff was brutal, ugliest start for a Brewer all season. Only latest 2 2/3 innings, gave up 5 walks, hit 3 batters, threw 3 wild pitches, only gave up 2 hits but both of those hits were home runs. The first two relievers out of the pen, Williams and Claudio, were also bad which put the Brewers in an 8 run hole early. For the second day in a row, the Brewers use 7 relievers which isn't encouraging since the next off-day doesn't happen until May 18.

Hiura, Sogard and Garcia all got the day off, which really made that 8-run hole look completely insurmountable. But as happens so often in baseball, the guys off the bench - Holt, Gamel, Gyorko - combined for 7 hits and 2 home runs and likely did a better job than the starters would have. The Brewers were actually able to get the tying run on first base in the 9th, but Garcia came off the bench and ended the game with a weak ground ball to second base.

The engine probably should make a move and bring in some pitching reinforcements for Thursday's game. Devin Williams has as extremely high 16.8 K/9, but he has a 8.76 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and has been responsible for at least 1 run allowed in 3 of his last 4 outings.
