May 15 - Reds 8, Brewers 6

Roster move before the game-
Drew Rasmussen recalled from AAA, J.P. Feyereisen optioned to Biloxi (AA)

Brewer pitching hammered in today's game. Box score says it all. 14 hits and 6 walks for the Reds...20 baserunners in 8 innings. A seemingly endless stream of baserunners for Cincinnati and the Brewers seemed fortunate to only allow 8 runs. A quick glance at the box score shows Burnes allowed 2 unearned runs, but Burnes committed the error that led to those two runs (little tapper back to him that he couldn't field). The Reds offense was even able to get to Ray Black (allowed 2 runs), which has been a rare occurrence.

Yelich's home run was a 457 foot blast.

The Brewers now hold a two-game lead in the division as the Cardinals also lose. St. Louis are only 3-7 in their last 10 games.

In other league news, the injury that Kyle Hendricks suffered in the recent game against Milwaukee turned out to be a torn labrum and he is out for the year. Tremendous blow to the Cubs who already sit in last place in what, so far, has been the worst division in baseball.

May 16 - Reds 9, Brewers 3

Due to the rainout on Monday and double-header on Tuesday, the Brewers didn't have any starter with 4-days rest. Houser was listed as the starter going in, and even though he would have been pitching on 3-days rest, he had only thrown 49 pitches in his last appearance. So I really thought Houser would start this ballgame. Instead, this turned into a bullpen game for Milwaukee and it led to another thrashing by the Reds.

Rasmussen got the start, gave up a home run to Nick Senzel on the very first pitch, walked the next three batters, got Joey Votto to fly out on a weak ball to center....then David "master of allowing the inherited runner to score" Phelps came in the game and gave up a grand slam home run on the very first pitch to Nick Castellanos. Pretty much game over from that point forward.

Sonny Gray gave up 10 hits in 7 innings but was masterful as it was seemingly weak ground ball after weak ground ball. Cain and Hiura for sure had weakly hit, infield singles and there may have been one or two more mixed in there.

Cardinals lost again, dropping them to a game under .500, so the Brewers maintain their 2 game lead in the division. With these three wins the Reds are up to 21-25 and despite the mediocre record are only 3 1/2 games behind the Brewers.

In other league news, Dodger shortstop Corey Seager was involved in a collision on the bases and is expected to miss three weeks with a separated shoulder.

May 19 - Yankees 6, Brewers 1

Gerrit Cole started for the Yankees and limited the Brewers to 1 run over 7 innings (a home run by Eric Sogard). The Brewers did have their chances though. In the sixth inning, down 3-1, Ben Gamel and Lorenzo Cain led off the inning with singles, followed by a Avisail Garcia fly out (Keon Broxton, pinch-running for Gamel, advanced to third), then a Keston Hiura strikeout, then a medium length fly out to center by Christian Yelich. In the seventh inning, still down 3-1, Ryan Braun led off the inning with a single, Omar Narnaez walked, followed by a Luis Urias fly out, an Eric Sogard strikeout and a Brock Holt strikeout. So back to back innings with 2 on, 0 out and the Brewers could not score a run.

Corey Knebel pitched in the 8th and gave up 3 runs without recording an out. Brett Gardner walk, Gleyber Torres single, 3-run home run by Giancarlo Stanton. Knebel's ERA up to 6.55. Aaron Judge hit a 2-run home run off of Freddy Peralta in the 2nd.

Hmm. Bullpen MVPs reading page 5 to here are Feyereisen and Rasmussen. It's comical. Rasmussen having parts to all 3 losses vs Marlins gets optioned for Feyereisen who promptly throws a bad outing. I think is how it went. Rasmussen pitching the following game. Poor outing recall JPF. The simulation is awful. I'll probably check in again around 1/2 way through the season just to further see how awful it is.
On BRef's version Hiura has a worse BA than 3 Brewer pitchers.
Credit and appreciation that you've put this work together. Far too cringy for me to take any of as a realm of a possible season.

May 20 - Brewers 12, Yankees 3

The game was tied 3-3 after 5 innings and looked like it was a potential nail-biter. But the Brewer bats hammered the Yankee's bullpen, 7 earned runs in 3 innings, to turn this one into a laugher. This is the worst loss the Yankees have suffered all year, prior to this the worst loss they had was a game against the Rangers on April 14 where they lost 10-4.

Christian Yelich with a two home run game, his first multi-home run game so far this season. Brock Holt replaces an injured Luis Urias and hits a two-run home run in the sixth. Ryan Braun puts the final three runs on the board with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Also a nice game for Avisail Garcia with a double, single and a walk.

Lorenzo Cain again starred on defense. In the first inning he threw out Brett Gardner when he tried to go from first to third on a Gleyber Torres single. In the eighth inning, with the bases loaded, Miguel Andujar hit a hard sinking liner that looked like it would fall in, but Cain made a diving catch and then threw out Gio Urshela who wandered way too far off of first base.

Brewer pitching allowed quite a few baserunners in this game, but the Yankees could only manage three runs and all were courtesy of Gleyber Torres. Torres hit a two-run home run in the third and a solo shot in the fifth. The home run in the fifth was a 463 blast to straight-away center field.

Luis Urias and Brett Gardner both left this game due to injury. Urias has already been listed with a strained triceps with a day-to-day status for two weeks. The extent of Gardner's injury is still unknown.

May 21 - Yankees 6, Brewers 3

Roster move before the game-
Drew Rasmussen recalled from AAA, J.P. Feyereisen optioned to AAA

Frankly a boring game for Brewer fans. New York takes an early 2 run lead, builds it to a 5-1 by the middle of the fourth and cruised to victory.

Chris Archer makes his Yankees debut and is solid over 6 1/3 innings. Adrian Houser is terrible once again. I was hoping Houser would have been skipped as Burnes hasn't pitched since the 15th (5 days rest) and Lindblom hasn't pitched since the 12th (8 days rest). I haven't heard many boo-birds so far but they were out in full force after Houser gave up back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning. Houser is up to an 8.61 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 6.62 FIP and opponents have a .345/.405/.655/1.059 line against him. He needs to be sent to the bullpen immediately.

Ryan Braun hit a solo home run in the fourth. That was easily the #1 highlight for Brewer fans.

Cardinals win and are now 1 1/2 behind the Brewers. There should be some wins in the near future as their next two series are home series against the Cubs (17-31) and the Giants (19-29).

In other league news, Mariners catcher Tom Murphy broke his ankle and will miss four months.

May 22 - Cubs 6, Brewers 4 (10 innings)

Terrible loss for Milwaukee. The Brewers held a close 4-2 lead late, which has become somewhat of a rare occurrence, and had it setup for a Knebel 8th and Hader 9th. Knebel started the 8th and walked Rizzo, got Baez on a fielder's choice ground ball, walked Schwarber…and Counsell pulled him after the second walk which looked to be the right move given his recent struggles. Chris Lee came in and worked out of the jam, surrendering a walk to Caratini but then striking out Contreras and getting Almora on a weak fly ball. Hader then starts the 9th still with the 2 run lead. Descalso strikes out looking. Heyward strikes out, but a Narvaez passed ball allows him to reach first base. Happ flies out to right field on a very hard hit liner. Rizzo comes up...a lefty/lefty matchup one would figure would favor Hader...Rizzo has struggled this year with only 3 HRs and entered the game with a poor .636 OPS...and smashes a 3-2 pitch for a 405 foot home run to right-centerfield. Two unearned runs score as a result of a passed ball, leading to extra innings and a Brewer's loss.

The big blow in the 10th inning was a Descalso double that knocked in Caratini and Almora.

Burnes was the starter and looked alright, but was pulled early as the pitch count got a bit out of hand early (he threw 49 pitches in the first two innings). One of the runs he allowed scored on a balk...just another example of how the Brewers just flushed this game away.

Yelich and Braun with back-to-back home runs in the 4th. Urias knocked in Yelich on a single in the sixth, and Gamel scored on a sac fly by Garcia in the 7th. Things were looking good for Milwaukee at that point. But overall a frustrating game for Brewer hitters as there were many blown chances...11 hits, 5 walks, errors by Bryant and Rizzo that allowed two more baserunners...and the Brewers could only manage 4 runs even with all that action on the bases.

However, the biggest news from this game is that Corbin Burnes hit Kris Bryant in the foot with a pitch in the fifth inning that resulted in a fracture. Bryant is expected to miss 3 weeks of action.

The Cardinals lost again so the Brewers maintain a 1 1/2 game lead. The Pirates are now on a 7-3 stretch which has elevated their record to a really mediocre 22-26, but that's still good enough for 3rd place in the division, only 2 1/2 games behind the Brewers.

May 23 - Cubs 17, Brewers 4

The one bit of good news today, Smoak was activated from the DL and is starting a rehab assignment.

And from the "fresh arm" front-
J.P. Feyereisen recalled from AAA, Drew Rasmussen sent to AAA

Also worth nothing that Hernan Perez replaces the injured Kris Bryant on Chicago's roster.

As far as the game, pitiful Brewer defense leads to TEN UNEARNED CHICAGO RUNS. Brewer pitching can hardly be excused, 13 hits, 9 walks, 4 home runs (3 of those to Ian Happ) and another game where they have to use the entire bullpen. Yelich smacked another home run and looks to finally be in one of those stretches where he can carry an entire offense. But lately the pitching has been so bad that it won't even matter.

IMO it's time to bring up Eric Lauer and give Bowden Francis (1.82 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 2.69 FIP in AAA) a chance.

So the Brewers fall to 26-26. But the Cardinals, Pirates and Reds all lose as well so the Brewers maintain their 1 1/2 game lead.

In other league news, A's starting pitcher Chris Bassitt suffered a torn flexor tendon and is out for the year. Bassitt had a 4.44 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 4.50 FIP.

May 24 - Brewers 3, Cubs 1 (10 innings)

Roster move before the game-
Drew Rasmussen recalled from AAA, J.P. Freyereisen optioned to AAA

A rarity today, a good old-fashioned pitching duel. Peralta was nothing short of masterful, tossing 6 shutout innings before being pulled (97 pitches, his highest total of the season). Jharel Cotton was just about as good for Chicago, only allowing 1 run in 8 innings.

Drew Rasmussen gave up a home run to Albert Amora in the seventh to tie the game at 1. Counsell then played with fire by using Devin Williams and Corey Knebel in a tight game but both of them came through.

Luis Urias hit an opposite field two run homer in the bottom of the 10th off of Craig Kimbrel to win it for the Brewers. Great moment for Urias as he has been slumping. Kimbrel looking like an awful move for the Cubs. 7.85 ERA, 2.02 WHIP, 4.03 FIP.

In other league news, Cody Bellinger suffered a mild shoulder strain and is listed as day-to-day for a week. Normally day-to-day injuries do not make the headlines, but this is Bellinger. Bellinger currently has a .342/.479/.793/1.272 slash line with 23 home runs and 53 RBIs (on pace for a 73 HR, 168 RBI season).

May 25 - Scheduled day off

Hard to believe MLB would come up with a schedule that has 8 teams not playing on Memorial Day.

Roster move made-
J.P. Feyereisen recalled from AAA, Drew Rasmussen optioned to AAA

Current 26-man roster-
Starting pitchers = Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes, Adrian Houser, Josh Lindblom
Relief pitchers = Josh Hader (closer), Corey Knebel (setup), Devin Williams (setup), Alex Claudio (middle), J.P. Feyereisen (middle), Ray Black (middle), David Phelps (middle), Chris Lee (long)
Catchers = Omar Narvaez, Manny Pina
Infielders = Ryan Braun, Keston Hiura, Eric Sogard, Luis Urias, Brock Holt, Jedd Gyorko
Outfielders = Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain, Avisail Garcia, Ben Gamel, Keon Broxton

Disabled List = Justin Smoak (on rehab assignment), Brent Suter (2-3 weeks), Logan Morrison (4 weeks)

Other players on 40-man roster (36 players total)-
Pitchers = Drew Rasmussen, Eric Yardley
Catchers = David Freitas
Infielders = Orlando Arcia, Ryon Healy, Ronny Rodriguez
Outfielder = Tyrone Taylor

Some other pretty significant news from around the league. Two trades made.

Toronto gets:
LF-J.D. Martinez (229 plate appearances, .256/.328/.420/.748, 8 HR, 27 RBI)
Boston gets:
1B-Travis Shaw (66 plate appearances, .211/.318/.509/.827, 5 HR, 13 HR)
RHP-Maverik Buffo - A ball (9 starts, 48 innings, 4.50 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 4.48 FIP, 4.3 BB/9, 7.1 K/9)

Martinez is the big name here, but I found this to be a pretty questionable move for the Blue Jays. OOTP engines tend to not like older hitters, Martinez' production has slipped in the sim and he turns 33 before the year ends. He has two years left on his deal but also has an opt-out at the end of this year, so who knows how long that deal goes? The Blue Jays had Derek Fisher DH'ing and he had a .224/.344/.428/.782, 8 HR, 22 RBI...so fairly similar to what Martinez is doing. Travis Shaw had been hurt for most of the year which is why his plate appearances are down. He steps right into Boston's starting lineup at first base, which was previously held by Michael Chavis who has really struggled (.202/.262/.380/.642, 6 HR, 18 RBI). Buffo ranks just outside of Boston's top 30 prospects.

Washington gets:
RHP-Brandon Kintzler (19 1/3 innings, 6.98 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 3.89 FIP, 4.2 BB/9, 6.1 K/9)
Miami gets:
RHP-Jackson Tetreault - AA ball (8 starts, 41 2/3 innings, 6.91 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 5.21 FIP, 3.7 BB/9, 7.8 K/9)
SS-Jose Sanchez - A ball (118 plate appearances, .240/.322/.250/.572, 0 HR, 4 RBI)
RHP-Jacob Howell - A ball (8 starts, 37 2/3 innings, 4.06 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 4.19 FIP, 4.8 BB/9, 8.1 K/9)

Kintzler is having a poor year, but the Nationals bullpen is awful (6.14 ERA, worst in the NL) so it's not surprising they would make an early move like this. None of the three prospects are anywhere near the Marlin's top 30 prospects (Tetreault is the top rated, only at #49).

Mike Trout hit career home run #300.

Random question, is Yordan Alvarez the total and complete stud that your sims are showing? I have him in a couple keeper leagues, and wasn't sure I'd keep him or not...

Alvarez's game ratings (contact, gap power, home run power, discipline, avoid K) all make him look like he will be a future masher. It's worth noting that he was insanely good in March/April (OPS well over 1.200, 18 home runs in 139 plate appearances) but he hasn't been as good in May (.831 OPS, 4 home runs in 102 plate appearances).

As far as a fantasy league, the guy did have 27 home runs and a 1.000+ OPS in what just barely over 1/2 a MLB season in 2019. He also pretty much hit everything on his trip through the minors.

yup, I have some really tough decisions to make.

Vlad Jr. is another guy that was so disappointing last year but seems to have that golden boy label hanging over him. I pretty much have to decide between him and Jose Ramirez, who is extremely proven.

May 26 - Brewers 9, Giants 7

An ugly, ugly day for the Brewer's pitching staff against the worst offense in baseball. But thanks to a big day by the bats, the Brewers managed to pull this one out.

Jeff Samardzija entered this game with a very respectable 3.79 ERA but Brewer hitters had him figured out from the onset. Lorenzo Cain, Avisail Garcia, Omar Narvaez, Luis Urias and Brock Holt all with first inning singles that resulted in 3 runs. Samardzija was struggling badly and only managed to get out of the inning when Brandon Woodruff came to the plate (OOTP doesn't give Woodruff nearly enough credit for his hitting ability). Inning two started with a walk to Cain, a walk to Garcia, a single by Christian Yelich and then a bases clearing double by Keston Hiura and that was it for Samardzija (1 inning, 6 earned runs, 7 hits, 3 walks).

At this point the Brewers held a commanding 6-2 lead. Logan Webb came into the ballgame for the Giants and shut down the Brewer bats for the next four innings. The Giants eventually took a 7-6 lead as Brewer pitching fell apart. But Eric Sogard had a big single in the 7th inning that scored Narvaez, putting the Brewers ahead for good. The Brewers got an insurance run in the 8th on a Narvaez single.

Woodruff started the game and managed to make it through five innings but it wasn't pretty. 2 more home runs allowed (Mike Yastrzemski, Evan Longoria), bringing his total to 14 home runs allowed in only 63 2/3 innings. Feyereisen was the fresh arm and first out of the pen, and unsurprisingly gave up 2 runs and the Brewer's lead. Josh Hader came into the game in the ninth for the save, but walked two hitters and was replaced by Chris Lee who got the final out. Just another really ugly day for the pitching staff.

David Phelps left this game with an arm injury. Report has already come in and he is out for at least one week with a dead arm. No word on a roster move yet, but something will probably happen because I don't think Counsell could function for a whole week with only 7 relievers. Could very well save Feyereisen from getting sent back down as a Feyereisen for Drew Rasmussen fresh arm swap was almost guaranteed to happen.
