It’s pretty obvious where Stearns is going this offseason. Just about every signing so far has been a 26ish year old former high draft pick who just hasn’t gotten it going in the big leagues yet.

This is a good point. Instead of going after cheap guys who have proven that they can be productive major leaguers, but either fell on hard times or are one-dimensional, he's going after a bunch of "pedigree" types who have big tools, for for some reason or another have never hit it big. Interesting theory.

It is the better approach in my opinion. The most likely window for a player to have a breakout career season is between ages 26-to-28. I know it would be preferred if they didn't have to rely on the "throw stuff against a wall" approach, but if you are going to employ such a strategy then finding guys that still have hope to boost the top of their career arc would be my choice every time.

Although he can't be optioned, so he misses on one box.

blame the rays for burning his first option his rookie year. had they recalled him on 1 september 2017 when rosters were eligible to expand, he wouldn't have burned his first option.

people do realize that by signing robertson, it's now extremely unlikely that the club re-signs eric sogard, right?

That's an excellent point. I give Robertson a LOT of credit for not being named Sogard.

A utility infielder that we're trying to talk ourselves into with one year of a fluke WAR? Why would I want to watch the sequel when the original sucked?

Meh... his parents really deserve that credit. [wink]

One thing Robertson is not, is fast. He ranked in just the 20th percentile in speed speed last year. He sort of fits in with the rest of the Brewers' infielders in that regard.

Except this one is 26, and not 34. Addition by subtraction!

Robertson's ZiPS projection is .235 BA / .333 OBP / .336 SLG with a 1.0 WAR projected over 289 at bats.

His Davenport projection is .238 BA / .344 OBP / .359 SLG with a 1.6 WARP projected over 375 at bats.

I assume this signing makes Mark Mathias' path to a spot on the 25-man roster more difficult.

Ooh, ooh. I know this song. Low risk, low reward. Play it again, Dave.

Contract is not guaranteed.

Also, he doesn't check the "Played For The Mariners" box for Stearns.

This is a key point. This basically makes him the 'preferred walk-on' equivalent of a NRI.

I certainly may be misunderstanding what I'm reading but the way I interpreted it is that it's a guaranteed contract, but pending he passes a physical, and his ability to pass the physical is what's not guaranteed. Again, just the way I read it.

Tom Haudricourt: It is my understanding it is not guaranteed. Pretty confident of that.

Robertson is still Arby's eligible, so I'd guess his contract is guranteed to the same extent as any other Arby's deal.

Cut him by x-date & you only have to pay him 30 roast beefs sandwiches, cut him after x-date but before opening day & you only have to pay him 45 roast beef sandwiches.

Contract does not become fully guaranteed unless he makes the OD roster.

“I’m not looking for the best players, I’m looking for the right ones.” Herb Brooks

Stearns may be taking that kind of thinking to a new level.

fortunately for mark mathias, the brewers will have a 26-man roster.

I'm a fan of robertson. Hardly a splashy signing but he would be a good utility IF with potential for regular playing time if he hits. He can take a walk which would be refreshing trait for a Brewer. I'd be more excited if he was LH.

The brewers keep up their offseason signing players they hope to find lighting in the bottle. They must corner the market in utility Players. Going to be fun this years bench.

Do you like that philosophy better than the "reclamation projects" that you've been so critical about?

Remember ... a utility player is is only a utility player until he proves to be good enough to shed that label. Not saying guys like Robertson, Lopes and Reyes are good enough, but if you hit on one, there is the possibility of a cheap everyday player. If you squint hard enough, you could perhaps see Robertson taking Gyorko's role as the RH side of a 3B platoon, and perhaps spelling Hiura at 2B and getting some time at 1B as well.

This is one of those things where if he is the utility guy, okay, not a terrible signing.

If he is getting 400+ ABs and hitting like 2019...umm...nope.
