From our earlier post on the players released in December:

Mass Haas said:
RHP Branden Nunn signed as a NDFA with Milwaukee out of Missouri Baptist five days before his 22nd birthday this past June. Nunn pitched well in the desert heat, but based on the sheer number of bodies the Brewers brought in this summer post-draft, never had an opportunity in Helena or beyond. The Brewers went with a greatly reduced number of players in their Instructional League camp this season, and one wonders if that hurt some of the players on this list of releases.

Congrats and good luck to Nunn, who signed with the Lake Erie Crushers (Avon, OH) of the independent American Association this week.

OF Jose Gomez (39th round, 2016) also had a great backstory, given his 5'3" frame, as was covered in this Helena Independent feature. Seems like a fine young man, and someone easy to root for moving forward.

Gomez has signed with the Sussex County Miners (Frankford Township, New Jersey) of the independent Can-Am Association. Congrats and good luck to Jose!

2016 Brewer Andy Wilkins just signed with the Twins organization. In 2017, Wilkins had to begin in independent ball before the Reds came calling to have Wilkins fill a void at AA for them.

***

2009 18th round LHP Caleb Thielbar, with 109 big league games under his belt, but also had to play indy ball the last two years, is back in affiliated ball with the Tigers.

Detailed press release here.

6'8" LHP Andrew Barbosa, who was in big league camp last spring and pitched all of 2017 for the Sky Sox, returns to independent ball in the Atlantic League (press release).

Veteran infielder Nick Noonan signed a minor league deal with the Athletics.

Cardinals signed OF Victor Roache to a minor league contract.

Roache, a former first round pick, batted just .186/.250/.347 with six homers over 57 games last season between the High-A and Double-A with the Brewers and Dodgers last season. The 26-year-old has always shown interesting power, but he has failed to make any progress with his approach.

2010 - 2013 Brewers farmhand LHP Brian Garman is taking his established collegiate pitching coach career to the professional ranks, joining the Angels' organization at the High-A level.

***

Speaking of coaches, LHP Joe Thatcher's nice MLB career run ends, and now at age 36, he returns to his Kokomo, IN roots as a college coach. Thatcher was a Brewers' 2004 independent league signing who was dealt to San Diego along with RHP Will Inman and LHP Steve Garrison in the 2007 Scott Linebrink trade.

Obviously an alumni of the big league club as well, but also a long-time Brewers prospect, LHP Manny Parra has signed a minor league deal with the Giants.

Parra hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2015. Following his 2016 Tommy John surgery he pitched in 20 games last season split between Independent ball with Bridgeport and AAA with the Iowa Cubs. His results in each were not very good.

Many of us sure over-reacted to that trade. Inman never made it, and the Hun at least had some big league time (is he still playing?)

Ya, I remember some posters wanting to hang Melvin for trading Inman for a half season of a RP. Just went and checked his minor league stats and he did ok at AA and then got torched at every AAA spot after that and retired after 2013.

I should have mentioned, since it was the Cardinals that signed him, you can pretty much count on him turning things around, and being a thorn in our sides until he retires...

27-year-old RHP Brooks Hall, the 2009 4th rounder who pitched in the Diamondbacks organization last summer, has to go the independent ball route to begin 2018, signing with Lancaster (PA) of the Atlantic League.

RHP Austin Ross, one year removed from the Brewers' system and coming off a strong year for the Reds spent mostly at AA, inked a minor league free agent deal with Arizona.

Unfortunately for Ross, the Diamondbacks released him today.

RHP Aaron Myers, 24, who the Brewers traded to the Orioles last July for international signing pool money (believed to be $250,000), was released by Baltimore this week. Myers, who the Brewers had inked as an undrafted player after the 2015 draft, made nine relief appearances for the Orioles A-Ball team after the trade.

March 9th update: Myers signed with Lake Erie (Avon, OH) of the independent Frontier League.

RHP Tayler Scott (Jeremy Jeffress trade with Texas) performed really well as a non-roster player in Texas camp this spring.

Catcher Shawn Zarraga (Brewers organization 2008 - 2014) has signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers, the only affiliated team he's suited up for in a game since leaving the Brewers in a trade involving three minor league players that didn't prove very fruitful on either end. Zarraga, about to turn 29, was in Reds' camp last spring training but was released, and had to go the indy ball route, before the Dodgers brought him back in July. Now they bring him back again.

Zarraga was released March 23rd by LA.

RHP Junior Rincon (Brewers' organization 2014-2016) was released by Atlanta Sunday. He had spent 2017 in their system at High-A and AA.

Infielder Jose Sermo, the Brewers' 35th round pick in 2012, released in November 2014 but who re-surfaced in the Red Sox organization in June of 2016 after an indy ball stint, was released by Boston this week. Sermo, now 26 (27 next March) seemed to have several big moments playing against the Mudcats in 2017.

Less than two weeks later, Sermo gets scooped up by the Royals organization, good for him.

Sermo released by the Royals today.

Dennis Sarfate set the NPB single season saves record last year and won his league's MVP award. He also requested to be posted but was denied.
