From our summary post of the mid-December 2017 releases --

Mass Haas said:
On the players released this week:

Player name link leads to MiLB.com stats page --

Nicholls State RHP Jake Smith (22 as of last August) was also a non-drafted free agent signee, but he got two summer chances (2016, 2017) to impress in Maryvale. Overall, Smith fanned 45 in just 30.1 IP with a .156 batting average against, but also walked 28. My goodness, harness that control somehow, and that's an arm that likely has a chance at new opportunities.

Smith has found work in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with the Canaries of the independent American Association.

From their press release:

Jake Smith, 22, spent the last two seasons in the Arizona Rookie league with the Milwaukee Brewers. Throwing a combined 30 innings, Smith showcased his swing-and-miss stuff, striking out 45 batters, while only allowing 17 hits.

“I’m pleased to add Jake Smith to our roster,” says Manager Mike Meyer. “Jake brings a mid-90’s fastball with sink. He has a big frame that has proven to be tough on opposing batters.”

***

As always, kudos to those who choose to pursue their big league dream.

OF Jose Gomez (39th round, 2016) also had a great backstory, given his 5'3" frame, as was covered in this Helena Independent feature. Seems like a fine young man, and someone easy to root for moving forward.

January 2018 --

Gomez has signed with the Sussex County Miners (Frankford Township, New Jersey) of the independent Can-Am Association. Congrats and good luck to Jose!

Gomez was released by Sussex last week.

Former Rule 5 pick 3B Colin Walsh has gone the independent route with Sugar Land of the Atlantic League.

Once you get a taste...

a couple notable ex-prospects who may be finally putting it together:

* Victor Roache - though already 26 years old, he has an incredible 10 HR already at AA. classic Cardinals.
* we've seen his early hot streaks before, but Michael Reed might finally be developing that power, as he has a 1.024 OPS so far, albeit in AA at 25.

I've been following his independent and winter ball career, for some time, but this feature article prompts me to update you on LHP Tyler Alexander

Alexander (career pro stats) has been excellent since, and frankly, surprised he hasn't received a second affiliated chance as of yet.

You may remember Alexander was suspended in January of 2015 (drug of abuse), and was then released by the Brewers the following June.

Gwinnett outfielder Reed biding his time in first year with Braves' organization

Michael Reed was bumped from a red-hot AA 2018 season to AAA a couple of weeks ago, still doing well. Q&A at the link.

Great article about Hurricane Iribarren over at The Hardball Times...

https://www.fangraphs.com/tht/away-from-the-diamond

It mentions that more than one organization is interested in bringing him into player development once he hangs up the cleats.

Last night Jordan Yamamoto went seven innings giving up two hits and striking out 13. I think he was a bigger piece to the Yelich deal than some think.

Wendell Rijo was assigned to Tampa in the Florida State League, he's playing second base.

After three High-A games, up to AA Trenton, where he debuted Saturday. We'll see if the playing time is still frequent.

RHP Jordan Desguin is rewarded for going the indy ball route after his March 30th release. The 2015 36th round pick played for Maryvale, Helena and Wisconsin during his Brewer tenure.

A Frontier League All-Star, picked up by Seattle

The thing great for Iribarren is that he's got more than 43 days in the majors. That will give him lifetime healthcare coverage (he got that by just appearing in a big league game), plus an annual pension of $34,000 (starting at age 62). Not a bad deal for him. Gives him some security down the road. Plus, as the article notes, he looks like he'll be able to stay in the game as a coach after he retires.

Recently released Jose Cuas signs with the independent Atlantic League (stats link), and longtime Brewers farmhand catcher Adam Weisenburger retires from the same league.

Always was a fan of Adam's, sorry he never got that cup of coffee despite being in big league camp as a non-roster invite for a few seasons.
