The Brewers released Biloxi first baseman Art Charles on Saturday. He had been on the 7-day DL retro to July 1st, perhaps that had been on a paper move.

Charles, plucked from the Reds in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft by the Brewers not long after the Reds had signed Charles, coming off a monster indy ball season. Charles had seen prior time in the Toronto and Philadelphia systems.

Charles was seeing only sporadic playing time as of late for the Shuckers, and for the season, posted a .176/.248/.287 line (.535 OPS) in 43 games (108 AB's).

We wish the big guy well in his future endeavors.

From the Wisconsin Media Notes:

Catcher A.J. Murray has been transferred to Biloxi. Catcher Yoel Vasquez has been transferred from Helena.

This is where the fun begins.

Murray had been on Wisconsin's disabled list since June 19th, but he is listed as active on Biloxi's current online roster.

Vasquez was not on Helena's disabled list, but he is listed as being so on Wisconsin's current online roster.

***

22-year-old LHP Quintin Torres-Costa gets a well-deserved bump from Carolina to Biloxi. Torres-Costa, tremendous value as a 35th round pick in 2015, has struck out 190 in 141.2 career innings, with a 1.29 WHIP.

All aboard the QT-C bandwagon! I've had my eye on him for the past year and a half; he's never made my top 35 prospect list but has been just outside of it (have mentioned him in my "others").

Between QT-C and Nick Ramirez the Brewers have some solid left-handed relief prospects on the horizon. Ramirez started off slow - he hadn't pitched in six years, you had to expect some walks early on - but since June 1st he has a line of 22.1 IP, 17 H, 1 ER (solo HR), 2 BB, 17 K. That's over 10 games, so he's done it averaging over 2 IP per outing and not as a lefty specialist. In fact, he's faced twice as many righties as lefties.

QT-C has been particularly nasty against lefties - this year over 15.1 IP he's given up 8 hits, walked three, hit two, and struck out 26. Also has a 12.0 K/9 vs righties.

The Shuckers provide some further detail via press release.

Tyrone Taylor activated from the 7-day DL for Biloxi as he concludes his AZL rehab assignment. Michael Reed placed back on the 7-day DL. As Jim noted, A.J. Murray transferred to Biloxi, but he was placed on the 7-day DL there. Essentially transferred from Wisconsin's DL to Biloxi's DL.

The Biloxi PR also confirms the Charles release and the addition of 1/3 of Hawaii KO.

Quintin Torres-Costa was indeed promoted to Biloxi's roster, but he finds himself on their Temp Inactive list.

Tristen Lutz and Je'Von Ward were activated onto the AZL Brewers' active roster last night. That brings that roster to the league limit of 35.

LG Castillo, Cam Robinson, Justin Bullock, and Karlos Morales will all need to be activated in the near future as well, so there is still a fair bit of roster maneuvering to accomplish.

College sign last year, didn't make it out of Extended Spring training dispite play well last year. That was a warning sign to me that he had fallen behind.

From June 29th --

And That said:
The Brewers have been very gracious and have clarified the status of each and every "missing" player:

Never signed/signing fell through:

SS Orveo Saint
RHP Victor Castaneda
C Jose D. Romero
RHP Julio Raudez
LHP Trey Robledo
RHP Cole Lipscomb

We mentioned earlier that the Castaneda signing looks official as of this July 7th post.

The Brewers' own transactions page indicates catcher Jose Romero (not to be confused with the DSL RHP of the same name) was signed on July 5th.

One more update, this one on LHP Trey Robledo. Here is a very detailed article out of Fredericksburg, Texas worth your while, particularly if Robledo is indeed a Brewers farmhand.

The article includes --

Robledo was sent to Arizona to join the Brewers’ minor league program almost immediately.

He is currently going through physical therapy after an MRI on his elbow and has been shut down for the 2017 season. This is just another adversity added to the list of many that encourage him.

Robledo is ready to come back next season 100 percent and ready to compete.

This might explain why Robledo isn't on a 2017 list, perhaps he's been signed to a 2018 contract, like the July 2nd international signees, and is working out and caring for his elbow under the Brewers' care.

Brewers should make it official later this week, but it appears they have signed veteran RH reliever Jeanmar Gomez to a minor league deal. He was DFA'd by Philadelphia and then released as of June 23rd.

One would imagine he'd be assigned to Colorado Springs.

Via Chris Harris' Biloxi Media Notes for Thursday --

"Shuckers closer Matt Ramsey was promoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday after leading the Southern League with 20 saves in 22 opportunities...the first-half All-Star went 3-2 with a 3.34 ERA with the Shuckers...it will be Ramsey’s first experience in Triple-A after pitching at the Double-A level since 2014."

***

Ramsey, 27, was plucked from the Marlins' organization in the Minor League Phase of last winter's Rule 5 draft. Seems fitting since the Marlins currently possess perhaps the most successful such pick in history in 1B Justin Bour.

Congratulations to Matt and to the Brewers on the find!

Trying to figure out the Colorado Springs Roster. Dubon and Brinson are active again. Garcia to AA where Houle goes on the DL. Kohlscheen to "Helena".

If it's true that Blazek was optioned and Phillips recalled, that leaves them with 10 position players (3 catchers) and 15 pitchers.

The Brewers transaction page indicates they have signed RHP Wilber Perez, a 19-year-old Dominican.

Unless assigned to a DSL team soon, Perez will be considered part of the July 2nd international period signings, and will begin his pro career in 2018.
