Colorado Springs Box Score

The Sky Sox had four errors on Sunday afternoon, which lead to two unearned runs - which was the margin of difference as Colorado Springs lost 4-2 to the Sacramento River Cats.

Josh Hader had a good game, giving up only one run on 5 innings of work. Hader allowed only five hits and a pair of walks against four strikeouts.

Sky Sox bats managed only six hits, lead by Nat Orf (2-3) and Gabriel Noriega (2-3).

Mudcats finish sweep in Mother's Day marathon
Mitch Ghelfi walked with the bases loaded to force in the game winning run on Sunday
By Carolina Mudcats | May 14, 2017 7:53 PM ET

Tweedledee meet Tweedledum. Today's game was a mishmash of walks, errors and bad plays. The Mudcats managed to score 2 in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. Fittingly, it happened on a bases loaded walk. They sweep the White Sox, run off their 5th win in a row, get back to .500 and Jake Gatewood had a hit to tie the Mudcats' club record of 23 straight games. I guess that makes the White Sox Tweedledum.

There were a few turning points in this game. Dane Dunning, one of the prospects the White Sox obtained in the Adam Eaton trade, was rolling along when he was struck around the hand area by a Trent Clark line drive. The trainer came out and they started warming up a relief pitcher. Dunning stayed in the game for three more hitters giving up 2 walks and a single. He then came out and I'm not sure the reliever, Kelvis Valerio, was sufficiently warmed up. In any case, he was greeted by heavy artillery giving up a single to Corey Ray, long double to Luis Aviles and a home run to Isan Diaz. It turned into a 6 run inning.

Marcos Diplan got the start for the Mudcats (4 1/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 7 K). He did not command his fastball from the first pitch. He walked the opening batter on 4 pitches, each missing its target by at least a foot. He still has work to do. Freddie Peralta (3 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 6 K) followed and seemed to be in control. The second turning point came when Zach Collins, taken in last year's amateur draft directly after Corey Ray, hit a home run off Peralta. He seemed to stop challenging hitters after that and trying to nibble at the corners. He started to get into deep counts and eventually had to be taken out. He and Jon Olczak walked in 3 runs in the 8th as the Dash took the lead with 4 runs.

The final turning point came when the Dash took out reliever Yelmison Peralta, who had retired 4 of 5 batters, to bring in a left hander to face Isan Diaz with one out in the 9th. Diaz promptly hit a long double to left center off the lefty. The Dash 3rd baseman had been thrown out for arguing balls and strikes and they had players out of position in the infield and hilarity ensued.

Leading the way were Corey Ray (1-3, 2 BB), Luis Aviles (2-5, 2B 3 RBI), Isan Diaz (2-5, 2B, HR), Jake Gatewood (2-5, 2 infield singles), Troy Stokes Jr (1-3, 2 BB) and Mitch Ghelfi (2-3, 2 BB).

Carolina Box Score

Carolina Game Log

I'm going to concentrate on the positive here. Trailing 2-1:

Carolina Bottom of the 4th

Lucas Erceg flies out to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe.
Trent Clark lines out, pitcher Dane Dunning to shortstop Danny Mendick to first baseman Brady Conlan.
Troy Stokes Jr. walks.
With Mitch Ghelfi batting, Troy Stokes Jr. steals (10) 2nd base.
Mitch Ghelfi singles on a line drive to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Mitch Ghelfi to 2nd on the throw.
Carlos Belonis walks.
Pitching Change: Kelvis Valerio replaces Dane Dunning.
Corey Ray singles on a line drive to left fielder Jake Fincher. Mitch Ghelfi to 3rd. Carlos Belonis to 2nd.
Luis Aviles doubles (6) on a line drive to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Mitch Ghelfi scores. Carlos Belonis scores. Corey Ray scores.
Isan Diaz homers (7) on a line drive to right center field. Luis Aviles scores.
Jake Gatewood flies out to left fielder Jake Fincher.

The winning rally:

Carolina Bottom of the 9th

Luis Aviles strikes out swinging.
Pitching Change: Ryan Riga replaces Yelmison Peralta.
Isan Diaz doubles (8) on a line drive to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe.
Jake Gatewood singles on a ground ball to second baseman Danny Mendick. Isan Diaz to 3rd.
Lucas Erceg reaches on a force attempt, throwing error by second baseman Danny Mendick. Isan Diaz scores. Jake Gatewood to 3rd. Lucas Erceg to 2nd.
Trent Clark called out on strikes.
Ryan Riga intentionally walks Troy Stokes Jr.
Mitch Ghelfi walks. Jake Gatewood scores. Lucas Erceg to 3rd. Troy Stokes Jr. to 2nd.

Shuckers fall short against Allard, Braves on Sunday
Mauricio Dubon homered and swiped two bases on the loss

Biloxi Box Score

VIDEO: Dubon homer at the summary link atop this post...

Three consecutive sub-par starts for Jorge Lopez since his 10 K game, check out his line. RHP Jon Perrin's line looks shiny in relief, upon entering, he needed to get one out to save Lopez's start, but this happened:

Pitching Change: Jon Perrin replaces Jorge Lopez, batting 9th.
Ronald Acuna doubles (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Clint Coulter. Sal Giardina scores. Kolby Allard scores. Luis Valenzuela scores.

Double, single, and two walks for catcher Dustin Houle, the buzz is now official, Craig Counsell loved him in big league camp and is now getting the reports from the minor league staff. Enjoy that 40-man spot in the fall, Dustin.

How can people call for Hader or Lopez being moved up to the majors? Neither can't get past 5 innings.. We have enough starters that do that already.. There are only two starters that should realistically be called up if they need to (not including Guerra).. Woodruff and Espino and that is it.. end of discussion.. If they do get called up it better be past July or unless they plan on putting them into the BP.

And if someone DOES want to talk about bringing them up? LOL...c'mon. Hader threw 84 pitches and is pitching in the worst possible place in the minor leagues for a young pitcher. Yes, his walks have been a problem, but he's a lefty who throws in the mid 90's and is a top 50 prospect. He's gonna get the call. And I wouldn't give how many innings they throw a second thought. They're just no good reasons to have a guy like Hader(or Lopez for that matter) to be throwing 110 pitches in the minors.

The only thing that Hader needs to worry about is not walking as many people and he may need to be about 5,000 feet lower in elevation before he feels confident enough throwing his secondary stuff in certain counts.

And obviously Woodruff is looking like a great young pitcher, but Espino is a 30 year old who's never pitched at the big league level and who at the age of 30 and not being a real prospect isn't exacly going 8 every time out. He's averaging less than 6 innings per start himself. Heck, the same can be said for Woodruff. You're just not going to see minor leaguers going 8 innings very often. There's just no reason to push them in the minor leagues.

Don't get me wrong, I like both....just not the philosophy that has you demanding that nobody calls for Hader or Lopez over Espino because of how deep he can go into a game.

Not to mention with Hader's big loopy curve/slider, I'm sure pitching in Colorado Springs has hurt his development or at least confidence in that pitch. But nonetheless, he still has as much potential as any starting pitcher the Brewers have and I think a move to Milwaukee might actually help him.

so lets move up Hader just because he is a top 50 prospect according to MLB Pipeline? You don't move a pitcher up that cant control his fastball. Have you watched Hader pitch this year? It is not just his pitch count. He has control issues right now and he needs time to iron it out. I think Hader is a stud but it is not the time. Woodruff has been the better pitcher for 2 years now while pitching in the same elements. There should not even be a discussion on who gets moved up. Its Woodruff and Espino, that is it. Also, Hader doesn't have a "looping" curveball. He has a nasty sharp breaking slider.
