Final: DSL Brewers 6, DSL Cardinals Red 5

DSL Brewers Box Score

A four run-rally in the 7th highlighted by Eduarqui Fernandez' 10th home run, followed by a go-ahead home run in the 9th from shortstop Alberis Ferrer, propelled the Brewers to victory over the Cardinals. The win keeps the Brewers 4.5 games back of the steaking D-Backs club in first place.

Erys Bautista had the only multi-hit game for the Brewers, both singles, and he walked as well.

Ramon Carrasco, just activated and two days shy of his 17th birthday, earned his second save in his third pro appearance. Oscar Castaneda, so solid for most of the season, turned in his second rough appearance in a row, though he was able to limit the damage to three earned runs over five innings.

Final: DSL Cubs1 7, DSL Brewers/Indians 6

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

As has been the case so often this season, the co-oppers had a lead in the later stages of the game but coughed it up. On Wednesday, six runs scored in the 6th staked them to a 6-3 advantage. Then the seventh innings came and went to see the game tied, and in the ninth saw the good guys summarily walked off.

Jeicor Christian doubled and Francis Gonzalez tripled to highlight to offensive contributions from Brewers. Francis Casado took his first career loss after not recording an out and allowing the winning run in the ninth.

Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes

***

Box: Burlington 5, Wisconsin 3

Burlington had lost nine in a row.

Rattlers Let One Get Away In Burlington
Del Valle homers twice, including three-run shot in seventh to rally Bees past Wisconsin
By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

The money sentence:

They (the Timber Rattlers) could not take advantage of eight walks by Burlington's pitching and five errors by Burlington's defense and Wisconsin was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. It would cost them.

Box: Biloxi 6, Tennessee 5, 11 innings

Eleven-Inning Battle Lands Shuckers Series Opening Win
Biloxi Works Three Separate Leads to Outlast Smokies
By Andrew Chapman / Biloxi Shuckers

Here's how LHP Daniel Brown closed it out --

Tennessee Bottom of the 11th

Pitching Change: Daniel Brown replaces Tyler Spurlin, batting 3rd.
Jhonny Pereda starts inning at 2nd base.
Jared Young strikes out swinging.
Eddy Martinez flies out to right fielder Joantgel Segovia.
Christian Donahue grounds out, shortstop Bruce Caldwell to first baseman Ryan Aguilar.

***

Brent Suter allowed his first baserunner, as you just read, on the walk. Between Maryvale and Biloxi, five innings, seven K's, working on that stretched-out no-hitter (sorry about the jinx).

San Antonio Pre-Game Media Notes

***

Box: San Antonio 14, Albuquerque 7

No formal game summary available from either club as of this AM.

First game of the hyper-powered-location road trip. The Missions now a remarkable 72-43. The Isotopes, a Rockies' affiliate, fall to 47-68.

Missions put 23 men on base, smacking seven doubles, three by Lucas Erceg.

Home runs for Corey Ray, Cory Spangenberg, and yes, Burch Smith.

RHP Luke Barker did allow two of Smith's three baserunners to score, but was still otherwise effective over 2.2 innings. Although he'll be 28 years old in March, Barker, an indy ball find, will not be Rule 5 eligible this fall. So despite his success, that plays against him regarding a September call-up. Milwaukee likely won't tie up the 40-man roster spot for the winter when they won't have to. Barker almost surely will debut at some point in 2020, however.

Erceg seems to have figured something out the last week or so.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Not to take the thread off topic, but if Erceg, Brown and Ray can recover some luster we have some nice chips for next year's deadline if we are in the race for an arm or two. Might even move up to #29 on the farm rankings. [rolling eyes]

Stokes close to his career OPS after an early season slump.

There's a reason I've had him above Ray on most - if not all - of my Top 25 ballots. The guy just... produces.

EDIT: I'd compare him to a right-handed Ben Gamel with speed.

Huh? Stokes is hitting .241 with an OPS below .760 in the PCL. Those are atrocious numbers.

By comparison, in his short stint there last year, Gamel hit .349 with a .969 OPS.

Final: AZL Giants Orange 7, AZL Brewers Blue 2

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

Danny Casals went 3-4, but the rest of the offense managed one hit, while Jhoan Cruz had another tough outing, an outing which was more than enough to sink the Blues.

Rehabbing Karlos Morales, still just 19 (for a few more days), pitched two clean innings.

Final: AZL Reds 12, AZL Brewers Gold 1

AZL Brewers Gold Box Score

Yesterday's 12-1 win is today's 12-1 loss. Ashton McGee got on base five times with a single, double, and three walks; Jesus Chirinos and Zane Zurbrugg each singled twice. That was no match, however, for an unrelenting Reds offense and porous defense.

Cam Robinson did throw his second scoreless outing in a row.

Stokes' wRC+ of 85 is not great, certainly below average, but "atrocious" seems a bit far afield.

Troy's underlying numbers are mostly just fine - walk rate is well above league average, K rate is league average, overall power output is about league average, and he's still contributing on the basepaths. The main difference seems to be that for whatever reason, while the rest of the PCL is swatting home runs at ridiculous rates, Stokes has seen his HR/FB rate *drop* from 2018 to 2019, from 12.8% to 9.3%. Being that he has a near-identical FB% to last year, I would expect the HR/FB% to gravitate upward for the remainder of the year unless there's an underlying injury or mechanical reason causing the deficiency.
