Thames has had 114 PA's with runners in scoring position. He's hitting .146 with 2 HR and 16 RBI with RISP. That's dreadful.

He looks safe but inconclusive. Santana didn't put up any argument so...

True. Is that are a large enough sample for us to make a judgement? Honest question.

Also, pretty sure they never tagged Domingo and for some reason that wasn't challenged.

Although he seems like he agrees with it.

True, but I'm still not convinced that he tagged him.

No, it's not a large enough sample. His BABIP with RISP is .204.

114 PA's is about a month's worth. Lots of guys have bad months (See Brewers, August circa 2017)

I'm not able to watch, but there has been some debate over the last couple of year that because home plate is not a bag elevated above the ground like the other three and because the catcher can't block the plate anymore (for the most part) that it may be better to run through home than slide. Easier for your leg to elevate and not touch home, and sliding slows you down (which is why they say don't slide at 1st).

Wow, just digested that Thames has 29 home runs and 55 RBIs. What is the record for fewest RBIs in a 30 home run season? This has to be close, yes?

Which makes his OPS such an overrated joke of an argument. Who cares that his slugging percentage is so high when his 29 home runs are almost all solo shots?

The batter has zero control over how many players are on base when he steps to the plate. Unless there is a reliable clutchiness stat out there I'll take OPS as a pretty good stat.

Edit: Point taken, he stinks with RISP this year

Thames is pretty much Gorman Thomas and/or Rob Deer, except when those two homered there were actually runners on base.

Rob Deer was actually a pretty good player at least as a batter.

If Thames was clutch he would hit those extra base hits and homers when men are on base. Instead he's a sub .240 hitter that strikes out alot and when he actually does get those extra base hits to drive up his slugging percentage, nobody's on base.

EDIT: I just saw your edit now.

What I meant to say was Thames either homers or strikes out. An all or nothing hitter. Just like Gorman and Deer.

Their 7-8 who have avg's less than .400 combined getting on multiple times is annoying

I can say with near certainty that this home plate umpire is doing a bang up job hitting that 90% mark. [smile]

If this is Jeffress's first MLB at bat, he's probably not going to even get a bunt down, much less get a hit.

Broxton either steal or don't. But don't do that.
