I somehow thought Wilkerson was going to wiggle out of that jam, which would have at least given the Brewers a chance. This was a pretty pathetic effort by the non-pitchers at the plate and the Gamel error turned out to be the key play in the ballgame.

With Cain, Gamel, Braun due up I think you have to hope two of them can get on and then hit Grandal in place of Aguilar in the 4th spot.

The Loss of Derek Johnson is going to haunt them this year.

Why would that be?

The bullpen is not our weakness, that starting pitching is. Till it proves otherwise, on paper, it’s a pretty bad group.

The loss of Corey Knebel hurts far worse.

Johnson wasn’t going to make a successful major league pitcher out of Wilkerson

I will put up 10 bucks to get Kimbrel here. Go fund me if that's what it takes. My buying tickets isn't enough so do what it takes.

Augilar is a mess. Takes two good pitches to hit then flails at a terrible pitch. When is the last time he took a walk? Seems like he walked at a decent clip last year.

What do you do with him? Especially now that it looks like Yelich might be out for awhile the Brewers can’t afford that complete black hole in the batting order. He’s not going to get better sitting on the bench, but they can’t send him to the minors and can’t play him regularly. Unfortunately, thanking him for his service and great half season but letting him go may have to be considered if he doesn’t contribute something before too long.

Obviously he has been terrible. I think the earliest they would possibly move on from him is the end of May or beginning of June. If he has another month of being nearly as dreadful then maybe they’ll consider it. If they do move on from him I think Hiura would basically serve as the replacement bat as 1B coverage is rotated between Thames, Shaw, and Grandal.

Also, obviously not apples-to-apples, but Aguilar now has just two extra base hits in 85 plate appearances. By contrast at Triple-A Hiura has 17 extra base hits in 86 plate appearances.

Brewers team ERA.
2015 - 4.28 - Before Johnson
2016 - 4.08
2017 - 4.00
2018 - 3.73
2019 - 5.18 - After Johnson

Reds team ERA.
2015 - 4.33
2016 - 4.91
2017 - 5.17
2018 - 4.63
2019 - 3.27 With Johnson

The guy is one of the top 5 pitching coaches in baseball and we let him leave.

This team in trouble with no Yelich, Braun bad, Shaw horrible, Aguilar worse than horrible and the worst bullpen I can remember. Stearns should call up Taylor and Hiura. Also drop hart off 40 man and add Jackson, then call up Jackson to crew and send down a pitcher, whoever and go with a 12 man staff. 1 less bad pitcher off of the 7 man pen. This is pathetic. Stearns AND Attanasio are to blame for this dreadful bullpen.

At a certain point you just have to wonder what's going on. Petricka looked half way decent as mop up righty. He gets canned to keep Wilkerson and Wilson. There is no excuse for having these guys in meaningful spots. I guess we are in rebuild mode again already.

The bullpen is undeniably pathetic, but to be fair they expected to have a healthy Knebel, a healthy and reasonably effective Jeffress, and a healthy Wahl, who I think they saw as possibly their 4th best option. When you have to slot everyone up 2 or 3 spaces in the pecking order there are likely to be problems.

Even then, the Brewers still have not blown many (any?) late inning leads. The starting pitching is every bit as much of a problem as the bullpen and the hitting has not been close to the elite level we had reason to expect.

Taking Anderson out of pen has turned it to pathetic stage.

When knebel and Wahl lost for the year, jeffress at 84 mph, Burnes and woodruff taken OUT of the pen, that’s 4 high leverage arms gone. Stearns at the time talked about others in pen having to step up. Whatever.

All that happened, he went cheap > fields Wilson. Instead of trade for a quality high leverage arm AND signing kimbrel when his price went down to the bargain that he is now. Instead we get Detroit and LA rejects to pitch to a 18 mil catcher signed for this year.

As far as the rotation, it’s fantastic now, at least in comparison to our dreadful pen.

The lineup for some reason outside of Aguilar isn’t as much of a concern, at least not to me.

Do you have some inside information on what it would cost to get Kimbrel that the rest of don't have?

If he is a bargain now, don't you think he'd be signed? Seriously, get out of here with this nonsesne.

3 @ 45 is a bargain, compare to:

3 @ 51 wade davis or:

5 @ 87 Aroldis Chapman

All teams except brewers and braves up against luxury tax threshold AND would lose 1 st round or their highest pick.

The crew only a FOURTH round pick.
Braves should have signed kimbrel already but have ultimate greedy owners and won’t spend.

Again, do you know his "bargain" price?

Your speculation gets tiring.
