How does a base stealer get that great a jump on a lefty pitcher?

"You're not going to have him when you want him and you're going to run out of games. He can't pitch 90 games. It's just not going to work. If anyone thinks it's going to work, show me how."- Craig Counsell on Josh Hader.

4 of 5 to Braun were balls
Thames grounds out on ball 4

Great start guys, way to let him settle in.

What in the world has happened to Braun's plate discipline?

That was a less-than-ideal first inning

That’s a play Shaw never makes.

We've seen his discipline ebb and wane over the last 3 years often. He's playing real well so a self induced slump was due.

Hiura's bat is quick as hell but he really needs to lay off the high fastballs with that leg kick.

Kudoz to Gamel for at swinging at strikes.

Is Grandal the worst low ball blocking catcher in the league?

They don't have blocking numbers at BPro for 2019 yet, but over his previous seasons as a full time catcher Grandal has stacked up like this..

2018: 22nd of 117 (+0.8)
2017: 96th of 111 (-1.4)
2016: 31st of 104 (+0.3)
2015: 92nd of 109 (-0.7)
2014: 90th of 105 (-1.1)

So in three of five seasons (plus two postseasons) he's been among the worst blocking catchers. In two other seasons, including the most recent he has been fine.

On the opposite side of things are his framing numbers, which are pretty consistently excellent...

2019: 3rd of 79 (+4.7)
2018: 1st of 117 (+15.7)
2017: 4th of 111 (+26.2)
2016: 2nd of 104 (+28.0)
2015: 1st of 109 (+26.2)
2014: 7th of 105 (+15.3)

I'm happy with his framing, I'd just prefer him not to try to frame something that's looking like its going to bounce.

This one is pretty huge.
You win this one and I think Toronto will rollover when pushed but if you lose this one it's game on.

He is really similar to Rickie Weeks in a lot of ways. Not known for defense with a lightning fast bat. Past that the comparisons are take it for what it is worth. A lot of people preach Keston for elite ball on ball skills, but that actually translating to the MLB level is anyone’s guess. People forget Rickie Weeks hit a ridiculous .500 his last two years in college and was sporting some insane 7% K rate. Keston Hiura was double that in college. Not sure the talent comp for what they played against, but regardless crazy Weeks went from that in college to striking out a ton in the MLB.

I do think Hiura ends up a better version of Rickie Weeks, but Hiura could end up something like Weeks or even worse and it wouldn’t exactly shock me. He is assumed to someday be great when it may never happen.

Braun didn't chase pitches he couldn't get to, so he had to chase a bag he couldn't get to. [embarassed]
