A few random thoughts and observations...

At the start of the year if you asked me which west coast stop worried me the most between the Angels, Giants and Padres, I would have picked this one (obviously Dodgers would have topped the list). After going 1-5 in Anaheim and San Francisco this season (although they did go 2-1 in Chavez Ravine), the Brewers could really use a bit of a west coast course correction with this series.

Lucchesi has been good at home (3.11 ERA), and very good against left-handed hitters this year (.501 OPS). He has thrown 100 pitches just once this year, and it is sort of curious he is pitching on short rest after throwing 95 and 90 pitches, respectively, in his past two outings.

Any time the Brewers are in San Diego it reminds of Ryan Braun hitting some memorable home runs at Petco Park. Braun has played in just 25 games at Petco and has 9 home runs. The only other park where Braun has played at least 20+ games and has a better HR-to-games played ratio is Citizens Bank in Philadelphia (14 HR in 38 games).

Don't think I'm going to be able to stay up and watch all of this one.
This thing could still be going when I wake up in the morning.

He last pitched on 6/12 so he'd be on "normal" rest for other teams. The Padres apparently have been keeping their starters on an "extra" day of rest this season.

Good catch, I definitely misread that as being "short" rest the first time around. I didn't realize the Padres were doing an extra day of rest for starters this season.

Teams are obviously figuring out that lining up their lefties for the Brewers is a winning formula.

The Padres have been scoring a ton of runs lately and will provide a big challenge for the Brewers fatigued pitching staff.

We weren't going to go tonight but we have friends in from Whitefish Bay for their son's wedding so now it's all three. The UW Club's tailgate is tonight. I'm hoping the Pads will be drained from the weekend, but they were out of all of the games late save 2 9th inning surprises so their back end isn't all that bad off.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Brewers have an .803 OPS versus lefties this year which is tied with the Braves for the 8th best mark in MLB.

The Brewers also have 39 home runs off LHP which is 2nd best in MLB, just one home run shy of the Diamondbacks (40 HR vs. LHP). The Brewers are middle of the pack in how often they have faced LHP, for instance the D-backs have 114 more at bats this year against LHP which is likely due to playing in the southpaw heavy NL West.

The Brewers have a .782 OPS versus RHP which ranks 12th highest in baseball.

We are currently 10-10 vs LH starters this season, so it has been a break even strategy at best for opposing teams to this point.

For the season we have actually hit LHP (.803 OPS) better than RHP (.782).

The Padres just scored 44 runs in four games at Coors Field (11 R/G), in the sixteen games before that they scored 59 runs (3.69 R/G), well below their season average of 4.38 R/G.

Don't worry, I'm starting Lucchesi in my fantasy league tonight. Therefore, he's guaranteed to get shelled.

Machado appealed his suspension for arguing balls & strikes over the weekend, in order to play tonight; he must really be looking forward to getting plunked in retaliation for his theatrics in the NLCS.

I benched him, which guarantees the opposite effect. He'll have a great night, 8 innings, 10 K's 1 earned run and the win.

We'll see which of us caused the end result after the game. lol

That’s what happens when you smack around lefties.

Perez vs. LHP this year .295/.333/.508. I can't see Shaw starting over him against lefties. Hiura, sure, but right now it's gotta be Hernan.

That's come down a lot for him lately. For his career .276/.297/.451. He's ok.

But Hiura isn't here, so yeah with the personnel they have not much better option to use against LHP.

A good game from both Aguilar and Chacín as others have said will go a long way towards our mental stability. Then, we just have to worry about the lack of pitching on the market this deadline. Sheesh. Here’s to houser becoming Knebel.
