The brewers have to start making more contact. They hit homers but really not much else. Doubles, triples, singles. Nah. That’s why a team who leads the league in homers is middle of the pack in runs. Let’s start making some contact. Moving the defense. It’s too damn easy out there right now for pitchers.

Hopefully this is just a streaky team and the arrow points up soon

Is there anything more certain in baseball than once your struggling pitching staff finally starts to get going, your offense will take a crap?

Yes. The lineup the Brewers put out tonight won’t score any runs.

You gotta hand it to Counsell. He did everything in his power to make sure we lost these last two games. I wonder what he has up his sleeve for tomorrow.

He absolutely blew it yesterday. It was refreshing to hear him admit it, and he wasn't the only one, but he blew it yesterday. Yesterday was the one that really hurt, just finding a way to lose. Looks like another bad series now.

The frustrating part is he's otherwise been a pretty good manager this year before lastnight. I can't think of anything else so egregious that he's done. But in a league where a playoff berth can come down to one game, as evidenced by last season, you can't afford to just throw away games.

"You're not going to have him when you want him and you're going to run out of games. He can't pitch 90 games. It's just not going to work. If anyone thinks it's going to work, show me how."- Craig Counsell on Josh Hader.

If nothing else, the Brewers crappy play over the last month has turned the division into a five team race. And the Brewers could very easily finish fifth.

How many games has this team managed to win when they don’t homer? It has to be somewhere around 5

Whatever the number it’s not enough, like last year when he went offensive at the break, hoping he does again this deadline, adding a good hitter with a good approach and calls up a player or two. This is a vastly overrated offense.

I did think they would hit more doubles this year, but I think some of the would be doubles in the past are going for home runs now. The Dodgers are the only NL team within 15 home runs of the Brewers. Below is where the Brewers rank among the 15 teams in the National League for each of those categories...

Total Hits = 731 (Rank 8th in NL)

Doubles = 138 (Rank 10th in NL)

Triples = 6 (Rank 14th in NL)

Home Runs = 147 (Rank 1st in NL)

They won’t finish behind the pirates. But the reds they could. It’s so disappointing with the years moose and Yelich are having

Yep. The home runs are not manifesting into an offensive juggernaut because they don’t really do much else. They are decent at walking?

This team needs to make more contact if they want to improve in the second half. But that’s easier said than done

Hopefully the pulled grounder that found a hole isn't going to give Saladino more leeway. Don't get why it's 50/50 or worse for Arcia. Saladino, Aguilar, and Pina are all worse than bad.

Blown save for Kimbrel with the Pirates still batting in the bottom of the 9th inning. Runners at the corners, one out.

The Brewers may not FINISH behind the Pirates, but they might be behind them going into the break.

Cain’s thumb could hold him back all year. Hope not, but he concerns me more than any player.

All year all I’ve heard is how horrible the pitching is, and it hasn’t been good overall, horrible in April, good in May, bad in June, good again the last week, so trending up again, and Stearns can improve with a pen arm or two.

But this offense scares me. Cain > ugh. Braun too streaky. Hiura > Rookie. Arcia > bad again. Pina < .150. Massive Ks, can’t/don’t move runners. They have to hit multiple homers per game to score. Even if they get to the playoffs, The better pitching will shut down our power even more. Stearns has to know this, so I’m confident he’ll improve this offense over the next month.

So Kimbrel hasn't solved the Cubs bullpen issues.......maybe there was a reason nobody wanted to give the guy a huge long term contract........

That blown save falls on the Cubs defense. I just tuned in in the 9th inning and have no idea why Contreras was playing right field. But he butchered a simple fly ball that should have been the second out but instead put runners on second and third. Then the second baseman threw home trying to cut down the tying run at the plate and the winning run scored on a sac fly. So, Kimbrel gave up a walk and got 4 outs but it wasn’t good enough.

After tonight’s game Kimbrel’s ERA has risen from 13.50 before this outing up to 16.88 now. Yes, I realize an ERA after just a few games is meaningless, but it’s bringing me happiness on a lousy night.
