Really don't know why people get borderline angry at the very suggestion that maybe this team does miss Derek Johnson. If you don't buy into it, that's fine. I'm guessing the Reds are quite happy with his work for them.

That's because they got to play the Reds and Pirates(twice) coming out of the All Star break..they will return to earth in their next couple series against the Astros and Dodgers.

I can accept they miss him, and I'm fine with it being a giant miss on the Brewers if they could have kept him. But I find the idea that the bullpen sucks solely because he left quite funny. What do some people think he was doing? I'm sure they remember most of the stuff he said. Jeffress was a huge candidate for regressing this year. He was probably the luckiest good pitcher in 2018. It's just kind of amusing. No coach at this level can explain this kind of drop off. I'm sure he's a factor, just not THE factor.

Hasn't helped us this year. IMO the Cardinals are better than the Brewers. Better pen that will serve them well in the home stretch. Brewers will finish 3rd is my guess.

"Burch was pretty good" Rock says of his last outing, as a ball is flying out of the park. [laughing]

While the Brewers fatten up with 12 straight road games against the Cubs, A’s, Cubs again, and Pirates.

The pitching matchups this weekend could be really brutal with Gonzalez, Anderson, and Davies facing Quintana (of course), Darvish, and Hamels (assuming his rehab assignment tonight goes OK).

Did Stearns get lucky last year or is he really this bad at finding pitching talent? Last year looks more like the outlier.

I recall plenty of discussion about the likelihood of the brewers taking the bull penning approach for a full season early this year...

Yeah, not so much - I get the missing Johnson aspect, but why not also look at the likelihood of an extended 2018 run that included heavy bullpen use with key relievers late into october as a factor with how crappy this team has pitched in 2019?

Well, he let our arguably best starter walk and sign for basically nothing, all to experiment with 3/5 of the starting rotation being unproven... when we were one game away from the World Series last year.

The SP was not that good last year either. The best teams lose 60 times. Everyone's SP has lots of bad days. Point is, their SP was good enough this year. With a bullpen 3/4 as good as last year's this team is probably coasting to a division title. Instead we have a train wreck. I recognize Davies buried us tonight, but we lost a lot of winnable games this year by blowing leads or just not keeping teams contained in games we scored plenty.

For all the clamoring about needing SP, which yeah, we do...it was the pen that killed this year's iteration of the Brewers.

I’d have to look into that more. I don’t know if the starters have been as good as you think. Plus. I need to look into how many innings they go. They make the bullpen pitch a lot of innings too.

I actually think we will finish behind the reds. We will not finish behind the pirates though

Again, I didn't say they were good. But if these were the numbers given to you in March for what the SP would be, that would've projected pretty well with this offense and what the bullpen was supposed to be. The bullpen is why this season fell apart. The offense is arguably more disappointing than the SP. The SP was never thought to be a strength. It had to be good enough to let the other two win games. That didn't happen, almost never happened at the same time, and that is how you get a .500 record on a team with 4-5 all stars.

Yup...THIS was absolutely the death knell...letting it roll with three unproven, young starters. Anyone that wasn't concerned about that to start the year, just had their head in the sand. I told everyone I felt like it would backfire..you just CANNOT do that and expect to be legitimate contenders. Stearns's absolutely worst decision to date IMO. he missed badly on that one. What the hell was he thinking?? Combine that with the fact when Knebel went down, he did NOTHING to try to fix that either.

The brewers are pretty much favored every night. I wonder if you bet against the brewers every night what kind of bankroll you would have.

I'll actually defend that move. If you want a sustainably competitive team, you need good controllable starters. The only way to get there for a team like us is throwing those guys out there. If Chacin hadn't flamed out it wouldn't have been such a disaster. And even so, they still wound up with semi reliable starters and found a decent place for Peralta. Really, Burnes was the only guy that tanked completely.

Now, I'm firmly entrenched calling the Miley move the worst of the off-season, but even throwing those three guys into the fire still shouldn't have killed this team. They have NOTHING outside of Hader.

As soon as knebel got, hurt I would have never let burnes start. He should have been kept,in the pen this year. I said that before the year. But they were already down that road promising him to be a starter

Losing knebel and burnes as releivers hurt. Followed by jeffress not being in shape ultimately ruined the season

Birch Smith looks like he would rather be getting a prostate exam than be pitching
