It is impossible that DJ is the reason a whole organization of pitchers went from above average to absolute trash. There is just no way one person is the cause for the total and utter demise of about 15 different player's pitching ability.

You are ignoring the fact that he has lifted the pitching staffs on two different teams. I will never understand how some just underestimate the loss of Johnson and the obvious downgrade to Hook.

Nobody is saying they wouldn't take him back. They are saying the pitching coach is not a 12-WAR contributor and has limited influence. This DJ nonsense is over-simplifying a complicated thing.

All these guys are sitting on his slider, at least the lefties. We should go to the pen early and often today, gotta stay in this game. Offday tomorrow so we can use the whole pen.

Fastball high and away to Winker will get it done I think, he won't be able to catch up by the time he realizes it's the heat.

Just taking a quick look at the Reds pitchers I see a Castillo that has greatly improved, Mahle and DeSclafani putting up similar numbers as last year, and then Gray and Roark replacing the trash of Sal Romano, Homer Bailey, and Matt Harvey. I think simply having better pitchers is helping the Reds quite a bit.

Sims looks fairly mediocre to me. That curve is definitely a plus pitch, his fastball is meh and he doesn't throw the change much...so I'm assuming it's not that great either.

Hiura disagrees with an imitation of Arcia.

Castillo was an easy call as a breakout candidate too. Looked like he was putting things together at times last year. A lot of pundits predicted the leap from him this year.

Perhaps DJ saw the writing on the wall that the ragtag bunch that the Brewers had put together in the pitching department would be unable to match what they did last year. If so, moving on to a new team on a pitching rebuild project was probably a solid career choice.

Are they the third or fourth best staff in baseball which is what their team ERA says it is. When you throw in what ballpark they play in its even more impressive. Meanwhile we have most of the same staff as last year and we can't get anyone out.

Where is the accountability? Where is the accountability? Who is responsible for this mess? You cannot continue to run Chacin out there. In the words of Vince Lombardi what the heck is going on out here?

It's countered by the sheer lack of other options. For some reason, this team believes Chacin is one of their 4 best starting options right now, yet Trey Supak looks like a AA Cy Young and can't even get a promotion to AAA. Maddening.

So true.

We better be pinch hitting to start the bottom half.

There was no reason for DJ to come back. The only thing that could happen is that he'd get exposed or lose credibility. Bolting when he did was 100% the right thing to do for him - cash in on what the bullpen did last year.

This pitching coach stuff is pretty tired to be rehashed in every flipping Reds in-game thread...IMO it's much more likely that this year's decline in pitching #'s has much more to do with some of these arms getting extended beyond their comfort limit down the stretch last season and through a long playoff run than the name on the back of a pitching coach's jersey who's telling them to locate their pitches better.

Knebel's damaged UCL finally gives way in spring training 2019 after pitching with it for a few seasons - maybe that's a coincidence that it happened after he was pitching 1+ IP multiple days in a row from September and well into October last year...but I'm sure the extra use played a role.

Jeffress was ridden hard through the first 3/4 of the season, and it was obvious in crunch time that he was probably the least reliable pen arm - he showed up to spring training with arm fatigue and hasn't been close to the same pitcher he was during most of last year.

There were threads expressing concern with innings limits on guys like Peralta and even Burnes for a time last year, now we're suddenly shocked that they aren't instant Cy Young contenders this season given it's their first full MLB season?

Last year, guys like Taylor Williams and Burnes showed flashes, but were ultimately replaced by better relievers (Soria, Cedeno, eventually Woodruff and Burnes). Overall, the makeup of the innings load of the 2019 brewer pitching staff is much different than last season despite many of the same names being around because roles have been juggled so much. Junior Guerra was their best starter through the first ~4 months of 2018. Davies was largely an afterthought. Chacin was really good from mid-May through the postseason last year, but it also wound up being the most IP he had in his career for a season...which I think has impacted him this season.

The 2018 Brewers were able to lean on "bullpenning" down the stretch and in the postseason because they had a ton of quality late inning pen arms and quasi starters available once rosters expanded. We largely forget that around this time of year last season that bullpen was leaky at best as well. This year, the combination of injuries and role adjustments have actually led to a totally remade bullpen - I'd argue not having Hader in the same role he was last year to get 3-9 outs every appearance starting around inning #6 has severely hampered his impact and weakened the pen. Losing Knebel and having a diminished Jeffress left them no choice with the relievers they have in house.

Exactly what I was trying to say, only phrased much better. [wink]

My 100% baseless guess was always that there was at minimum an unspoken feud brewing between among Counsell/DJ/Stearns - Counsell is the Chosen One and if guys want their coaching careers to develop there is nowhere to go when you reach the level DJ did. That combined with who is really calling the shots regarding the pitchers. It made perfect sense for him to leave.

Would love to see Aguilar hugging teammates at some point in this game.

Can Chacin be replaced by a guy who looks like he wants to be out there and/or appears to have a morsel of confidence?

I would have to think this is the last time we're going to see him pitch.

I'm not going to say Hook is a good pitching coach but he had a hand in developing Woodruff, Burnes, and Peralta. Guys who at least garnered some prospect status and have had varying levels of MLB success. DJ was responsible for developing pitchers for the Cubs for a few years and I can't think of any pitcher of note that came out of their system.

Cain stinks. Going to be a long contract.
