I think Clark is a better player than Barmes even when figuring in contract years and $$$, there would have to be more offered by Colorado, I would imagine

I think thevaccinator27 probably has it right. This is probably just an older report before we aquired Counsell and when the Rockies initially inquired about Clark.

But Counsell is old and could get hurt at any time. We can't be embarrassed again so we must get Barmes to make sure everything will be ok in case Hardy and Counsell get hurt.

Obviously Melvin is not set on the fact that Hardy and Weeks are healthy and ready to play, otherwise, he wouldn't be trying to trade and sign guys like this.

Clint Barmes is a bad baseball player.

Why are the Brewers suddenly attempting to acquire bad baseball players?

This whole thread is moot now that the Astros have traded with the Rockies...or is it?

I'd agree that his was either something that was discussed prior to the signing of Counsell and the offer of arby to Graffy or is just a false report/rumor. The only other way this makes sense is if Melvin was just trying to dump Clark or have Barmes in AAA as insurance in case Hardy did get hurt.
Besides already having Counsell and Graffy, Melvin also did offer Cirillo a one year deal to come back. So there would have been no room for Barmes. Even without Cirillo, there still is no room for Barmes on the team. And of course, Hall can still be used as the 3rd Shortstop on the team if need be.
Okay, he's still young and may be able to develop however, the Brewers still have Perez at shortstop, who they signed from Cuba. They also have Escobar and Brewer below him.
So, other than a way to dumb Clark or simply as insurance in case Hardy gets hurt, in which case he would probably just be a back up to Counsell/Graffy, I don't see how this deal makes sense.
That's the best I can do in how this trade may be true, though I still think it's most likely false.

Edit: Good point about the Colorado-Houston deal. This makes me think even more that this was either an old rumor or just a false one.

We're trying to get every SS possible so Hall doesn't have to move back to the infield right?

I think this would be a horrible trade, here's my thinking. Clint Barmes got hurt two years ago while carrying a bag full of venison up the stairs to his apartment. There's way too many deer in wisconsin!;)

If Counsell was not signed or the team thought Hardy can't make it back before a while into the season, and the team had absolutely decided that Hall would never leave the outfield, Barmes could be a mediocre pickup as a young utility guy/project. As the roster stands, I'll take my chances on picking up a garbageman in the RARE event that both Hardy and Counsell go down AND Hall isn't moved back to fill in.

If Barmes is insurance, I'm rejecting the policy. I'd rather completely suck with Escobar as the shortstop than completely suck with Barmes. He's not a member of a team that is competitive in my opinion...and I'd rather stop screwing around acting like we're trying to be competitive.

I think we'd completely suck with Perez first...then Escobar.

I'd have no problem doing this if it got rid of Clark. That's really enough.

Like I thought was probably the case,

"Melvin shot down a report in the Denver Post that said he offered outfielder Brady Clark to the Colorado Rockies for shortstop Clint Barmes. As if the Brewers need another infielder.

Barmes is in danger of losing his starting job to rookie Troy Tulowitzki but Melvin said he had no interest in acquiring a shortstop. He said the Rockies did inquire about Clark, who is available after losing the starting center field job last season.

Clark has a $3.8 million salary for 2007 and the newspaper report indicated that the Rockies wanted the Brewers to pay $2 million of that contract to trade him.

"I never talked to them about that," he said."

I doubt it happens now since they traded for Willy T.

As I wrote yesterday in this thread, the Denver Post has a different standard for journalism...it makes for fun message board speculation, but it's not necessarily factual.

Personally i would not have minded the trade would have made more sense if we did not already have a barn full of infielders lol!

While on the subject of Brady Clark, our neighbors to the south seem to want him. They believe he could be a one year stop gap to get them to Felix Pie.

For what it is worth.......
