No Thanks. I dont think Gary Matthews Jr is for real. His Season stats are so far above his career stats. I am all about taking chances here in Milwaukee, but I would like to see calculated risks.

Gary Matthews Jr is just SCREAMING Jeffrey Hammonds II.

It's usually helpful to actually name the player you're talking about.

I agree , Gary is going to get a hansome payoff from some team(hopefully not the crew) & I am not sure it was not all smoke & mirrors this season.

I know a lot of people would disagree with me but I would like to see Kenny Lofton play center for the crew. He gives them a leadoff hitter & would let Weeks move to the 3rd spot in the order. He could give a little coaching help to TGJ. If TGJ plays well, I sure a team would be looking to trade for him.

I wouldn't mind Lofton, as long as its a 1 year deal. He's getting old, so he wouldn't be a long term solution. I'd rather have him out there than Gwynn. (Though I'd rather have Hall out there if he don't need him in the infield.)

Id like Lofton - just because he is on the team doesnt mean he has to play every day. Gwynn would still get PT at least 1 or 2 game a week.

If the Padres don't exercise their option on Mike Cameron he would be one of my top targets. He is one of the finest defensive outfielders in all of baseball and will give you around 25hrs. He won't break the bank and will really help our pitchers.

I like Beltran too, but I don't see us taking on that sort of contract.

HUH?
Are you just presenting a mold for the player we should target and asking who best fits this need?

While I agree that the start of this thread is post of the week worthy, the comments have reminded me of Kenny Lofton. I've been pining for Lofton the past several offseasons, knowing he would be a likely upgrade over Clark the past couple of years, and could play about 75% of the time in CF (making sure to give the old man off a day a week or so). With Lofton available, I will completely toss out any small desire I had to acquire Juan Pierre, as Lofton may be older, but he's more productive and will be a heck of a lot cheaper. He's bounced around for what, the past 7-8 seasons now, so let's put Milwaukee on his resume.

Cameron would be the perfect piece to add this offseason, but I seriously don't foresee the Padres letting him get away. Petco requires a very fleet CF and there is no reason to imagine him leaving. Conversely, Lofton would have his value with us, though our neighbors to the south would be ridiculing us a bit. Then again, they'll probably push Pie this year, only to see him flounder and "Patterson"-ize right before their eyes. I am still waiting to see the remnants of their great farm system, though I need look no further than the orphanage in the NL East to see that their farm system can help other organizations flourish.

I'd love Cameron too, but you're right, the Padres would be foolish to let him loose. Especially with a leadfoot like Giles in the corner, and who knows who else in the other. I think his option is reasonable - $7 million or so.

A defensive player of Cameron's ability - and adequete offense, like Cameron, would be ideal for this club.

I certainly think Hall has the ability to do the job, but he's not going to have Cameron's experience and instincts.

There are only three or four other centerfielders in Cameron's class as a defender. Hunter, Andruw Jones, and Erstad. Maybe Kotsay too. I agree, the Padres would be stupid to let him go. He is easily worth 47mil to them. His defense and offense are a big reason they made the playoffs again. If by some miracle they don't pick up his option he would be the first player I would call.

Lofton would be another good choice. Plus the days he doesn't play we can use either Hart or Gross there. Tom Verducci blasted Lofton as a useless player in the playoffs and someone to avoid. He called him playoff poison. Well, Tom didn't mention alot of those teams wouldn't have gotten to the playoffs without him. August and September is when Lofton takes it to a whole new level. And it takes more than one player to lose a playoff series. Lofton has led teams to the postseason an impressive 10 times (11 if you count leading Arizona to the NCAA Final Four). His credentials and performance would cause me to give him a call and see if he wants to come on board.

I think Andruw Jones was one of the best defensive Cfers of all time, but as he's gotten older and much larger, he's slowed down. I think he's somewhere in the middle now, and trending towards playing the second half of his career in LF...

I'd love Lofton in a Devon White type role with the crew next year...he's still a very good ball player
