How would this be an upgrade?

Would it be an upgrade over Walker or Villar circa 2016? No. but would it be an upgrade over career-average Sogard or the 2017 version of Villar? Yes.

Hardy's last four seasons (31-34): Average

Games: 111
BA: .243
OBP: .282
SLG: .353
OPS: .635
OPS+: 73

Hardy just isn't good anymore.

He'd be acceptable for the first 25 games of the year before he gets injured for the rest of the season. So, no.

He's not an upgrade over a Sogard/Perez platoon who between them started half the games in a September playoff chase.
