I think he'd be too expensive, even if we could trade away Thames' contract. The money would be better spent on C/2b/pitching.

If only Doug Melvin had gotten the Mets GM job, I would have put money on him signing Brantley. But first he would have given Josh Donaldson a 5 year $110 million contract, and signed Gio Gonzalez for 3 years $60 million.

Defending Doug here.... not fair. Only a handful of bad contracts when with the team, and those, put next to the bad ones today, are not comparable.

I don’t really see a payroll issue if we were to sign Brantley. He is projected to get 3/$45 million, which is not locking us into a long term contract by any means if he can be had for that price. Letting Schoop walk makes this a much more realistic option. If the Brewers were to trade Thames or Anderson on top of already letting Schoop leave, there would be plenty of room to add Brantley to the roster.

Brantley would be a big addition to the lineup. Having a guy like him at the top of the order with Cain and Yelich would be huge in helping build a more consistent offense.

45 million for age 32-34 of a guy who has missed significant time?

NO!

That’s too much for a team with the Brewers’ payroll to gamble with.

I agree but this is exactly the type of hitter the Brewers should be targeting. I would love to sign him and have Braun and him platoon at 1B/LF. If this signing were to happen, I would make Domingo the fourth OF and see what type of SP you can get for Aguilar.

A top of the lineup of Brantley-Cain-Yelich-Braun-Shaw is quite nice.

Can't remember where I read it, but it states that Brantley is looking for 20+ per year.

He can look for whatever he wants, but I'll be stunned if he gets 20 mil a year. Only takes one team to do something crazy, but that would be a drastic overpay IMO.

Sounds like Brantley to HOU is getting close 2/32 speculated. Cruz might not be far behind for Astros. What a lineup!

Only 17 of the top 50 FAs have signed so far. Only 2 of those have gone to the NL Central: Lonnie Chisenhall (#42) and Jung Ho Kang (#47) both to the Pirates. I don't necessarily think they'll make a huge splash with where their payroll is at already, but it's early. Still tons of time to fill a couple holes.
