Bummer. He was probably my top target this offseason. Really would of loved to have his bat in the lineup.

This is the guy I'd make an attempt at signing if the price was reasonable. There is risk, which is going to be the case with all of our bargain basement signings...

We are a perfect fit for a guy like this.

Greg Bird has elected to become a free agent.

Bird was designated for assignment by the Yankees last week and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 27-year-old first baseman carries serious durability concerns, but he's flashed impressive power when healthy and could potentially land with a team that will allow him a path to a regular role in 2020.

I'm not opposed to bringing in Bird, but I think he's played his way down to split-contract level and I'd only be interested in him if he was willing to do that type of deal.

I'd be willing to take a chance on Bird. I don't see a big difference between him and Dominic Smith, for example, if we want to go with a risky 1B option. And Bird is basically free.

Why not get both since Smith can still be optioned and Bird will likely have to settle for a minor league deal with invite to ST. Best case both play well and you have a power bat on your bench. Worst case both struggle and we are out a lower level prospect, some payroll space for taking on Lowrie and whatever it cost to trade for a Smoak/Cron/Moreland type of player before the trade deadline.

Considering the guys who've jumped ship, I don't think a Thames return is likely though it's possible but I'm guessing he's looking for a 2 year deal in the $12-15 million range. The Thames/Braun scenario only means they'll have to spend and get an outfielder, and paying Thames might preclude them from a guy like Castellanos.

If they got Castellanos, they'd want to pair the cheaper Smith with Braun at 1B.

I'm really hoping they look at C.J. Cron.

While the Brewers did not pick up his option for $7.5 million, it's still possible Eric Thames could come back.

I'd be fine with that assuming no significant upgrade is out there to be had.

Didnt like not bringing him back. Would love to have him on the team. If they get him for less than 7.5 then well done Stearns. That would really leave 3b as the only hole on offense. OF is set. 2b, SS and utility IF are set. Catcher seems set. Get Thames, a 3b, and right handed bench bat and I am happy with our offense

I think this was talked about between Thames and Stearns when they let him go I would not be surprised to see him back.

It's too bad Justin Bour signed with an Asian team. he would have been an interesting bounceback candidate.

I will jump on the Cron boat. Dude has mashed lefties the last two years. Paired with Thames, yah, makes quite a bit of sense. Probably a .900 OPS production duo at 1B. Defense? Shhhhhh

Cron is so one dimensional is he worth a roster spot? Because he's such a weak defender he is bacically a DH, and then against lefties only. Considering the Brewers have a little less than 1/4 of their ABs against lefties, I'd like to see a more versatile player who is a good glove and could be used as a PH against both lefties and righties.

In 3852 career innings at 1B, Cron has a -0.7 UZR/150 and average-ish DRS numbers. Not sure where the notion that he is a horrible defender comes from?? That would be the best defensive 1B we've had in years. Last season Minnesota had him start 113 games and only 3 at DH.

Some have pointed out that Cron is not that bad of an OF as most talk about.

Why focus solely on Cron, when Encarnacion is out there and likely available on a one year deal?
