Bio-pics are usually a good bet to both draw well at the box office and generate Oscar buzz. La Bamba, Ray are others that come to mind in just the music genre.

Caught up on some movies while traveling the past week..

Yesterday A power outage causes a dude to get whacked by a bus. When he wakes up in the hospital, he is the only person on earth that remembers The Beatles. Given he is a musician, he takes it upon himself to start writing and recording all the Beatles songs he can remember. Pop stardum ensues. Cute rom-com from Danny Boyle.

Rocketman Mentioned earlier in the thread. A biopic about Elton John. His parents sucked pretty bad. There was one sex scene which was about as tame as a Lifetime movie. Movie as a whole felt like it was lifted from a Broadway musical as there are interludes where characters break into song. I like movies where someone overcomes demons to find happiness even if it's a bit sappy and stretches the truth (Elton was not clean and sober when he shot the video for I'm Still Standing).

Ad Astra I was totally into this one and then my plane landed. Gah.

The Irishman Scorcese's latest about an Irish hitman working for the mob in NYC. General consensus is that it's too long and I agree that it could shave 45 min at least and still get the point across. I also thought they should have used younger actors for the periods where DiNiro was supposed to be a young man. The CGI made him look younger but his body movements were still that of a 75 year old dude. Overall I really liked it though. I thought Joe Pesci gave the best performance of the heavyweights.

I didn't see it but it scored much higher with critics than audiences IIRC. I saw Frozen 2 and Neighborhood last week. I liked both, though I think Neighborhood is being overrated quite a bit. Some really hokey stuff in there, but Hanks put together a really great performance. Hoping to see Knives Out this week.

Saw Knives Out this weekend. It was really, really fun. Not perfect, but a great time.

I finally saw Far From Home, and the movie (IMO) runs into a growing problem in the MCU. They have a global threat, with supposed elementals that threaten the earth and Peter Parker says "where is Thor? Where is Captain Marvel?", and the answer is "they're busy".

Just like Avengers, when Captain Marvel would have shortened the run time by making short work of all the baddies, they story-lined her out by saying "she's busy doing stuff somewhere else". The solution to this is don't have spider man face global-level threats, so he's not asking for help from Captain Marvel or Thor. That's why Homecoming worked so well. He was facing a threat level appropriate to his own capabilities. Some guy with a flying suit who was trying to steal some weapons.

As more and more characters enter the MCU (x-men, F4, etc, etc) they're going to have to stop using "they're busy" when a weaker character like Ant-Man or someone says "I need help from a stronger character." MCU writing needs to make sure the threat level on these individual movies is appropriate for the characters they feature.

Idk, Thor was left off flying through space with the Guardians and Captain Marvel is all over the place. She only recently got involved with earth, so I didn't find either of those excuses particularly weak. I assume Thor will be a big piece in the new Guardians film.

I'm also not sure your solution would work. In the first Spiderman, the villain is pretty lame. He has to be because Spiderman isn't very good yet. But to go from Thanos to some lame villain in FFH doesn't really work for me.

Really, really liked 1917. Legitimately one of the better movies I've seen in a long time.

Agreed. The uniqueness of how it was shot was really fun for me.

Roger Deakins should pretty much win the Oscar every year.

1917 was great and one of those movies you should really see at the theatre.

I thought it was good and definitely worth seeing, but not in the category of one of the better movies I've seen in a long time.

Having your plane land and missing the end is probably the best possible way to watch Ad Astra.

I went and saw Bad Boys 4 Life last week. I often enjoy movies like that for pure entertainment value.

I liked both of the previous versions, so figured "why not?"

Movie was fine, but without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't seen it, there was one part of the movie, and how it ended that just irritates the crap out of me. So much so that it completely tainted the entertainment value for me.

Ha, I had the same exact reaction. I did enjoy the movie overall though.

Finally got around to seeing the Joker and it was bizarre watching as it was like somebody wanted to combine The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver into one movie while making the main character the eventual Joker. Add in the fact that Robert De niro was in this movie as well and I now can't blame Scorsese for not liking comic book movies as even comic book movies that are more artsy are just rip offs of a couple of his movies.
