One of the few things I like about myself is that I have absolutely no need or interest in coffee.

I never had coffee until I was married and now I can't start a day without it. I started on K-Cups, which I loved and now find disgusting.

I'm with you. I might have 5 cups of coffee per year, only black, and only if I'm having dessert in a restaurant.

We have the same coffee maker that we had on our wedding registry 31 years ago, it gets used that infrequently.

Is having coffee with dessert an older people thing? My parents and grandparents go that route constantly but I never see any younger person doing it.

Coffee changed my life. I was never a morning person until I figured out the power of coffee in my mid-20s. Simply amazing stuff.

I feel this way too but I do wonder how valid it is. It seems that after a while, the morning cup just brings me back to where I was before I started drinking it at all. I can't handle more than one cup or I get the shakes.

Coffee has been served with dessert in fine dining restaurants for many years, so if people grew up with that experience, then I can see them expecting the two to go together.

And the hot liquid helps melt away some of the stickiness of cake frosting, pie filling, etc. So while it may be generational, it's also not without merit.

This is exactly true. In general of course, I'm sure some are different but you have to wonder if that's more placebo effect than anything else. Same applies to the people that need to hammer 5 monsters a day.

For coffee/dessert topic. I want to say this is partly due to, trying to think of a way to say it, "trying to stay regular."

I’m not about to have a slice of pecan pie without a nice hot cup of black coffee.

I had brunch at a Kurdish place in Chicago and they had the most amazing coffee. I guess they roast the beans with pistachios so it ends up very nutty and kind of sweet.

Same. 34 and have never tried it. The wife tries to get me every time she has a cup, but I just don't care for it. Soda on the other hand...yikes. That's where I get my caffeine. Did anyway. 9 days without a soda.

How do you know you don't care for it if you've never tried it?

To be fair, the smell of it, and coffee flavored ice cream and candy, etc. kept me off it for 30 years. I always thought it smelled gross and any sip I'd had from my parents as a kid was disgusting. It still is kind of objectively a bad taste, a lot of research has been done on that topic. It in no way tastes "good" but people still love it, and it's more than just caffeine. Even as someone who loves it I would never say black coffee tastes "good" per se.

YYZ is an awesome track...

Fellow RUSH fan I presume?

I have grown to really enjoy their music from a musical perspective lately. I was first interested in the late 80's when I found out the Wisconsin Marching Band had taken some of their drum line cadence from Neal Peart.

As time has gone on, I have come to appreciate them as instrumental musicians. There are a lot of acts that fire up their Macbook Pros, slap together some riffs, turn on the autotuner, and make some tracks. This is a stark difference than these three guys.

I did not know what Geddy Lee had taken his inspiration from Yes and Peart from the Who (and others). I liked Yes as a teen. I guess I'm influenced by the late 70's and early 80's...

I just watched a documentary on Rush shot in 2010. All three of them are absolute virtuosos on their respective instruments (Geddy on two). Their first big tour was opening for Kiss. Geddy had nothing but good things to say about them. Gene Simmons made fun of them for not partying at all.

One other interesting thing I learned is that they tried to record La Villa Strangiato all at once rather than split it up into parts. Took them 11 days and they finally gave up and recorded it as three separate tracks and then fused them together.

I was looking for a cover of Ring of Fire for some reason and came across a band called Dragonforce and thought it was really cool. Sure... it is quite hard, but the runs with the guitars is very cool. Not quite the same as Rush, Genesis, etc., but instrumentalists nonetheless.

Interesting since the world knows that Gene Simmons is not, and has never been a partier himself. His party has always been women. He doesn't drink or do drugs, and never has.
