It seems so weird that they sign a 16 year old for $1.3 million, more than Hader and Woodruff are making combined this year.

Nothing against Medina. He deserves whatever he can get. It's just odd, to me.

If you sign the entire country, you won’t miss out on any top prospects from there!

Sound strategy if you ask me.

Seems as though the international scouting department must have found a market deficiency in Venezuela? Pretty incredible looking at that signing list and seeing basically all Venezuela. The Venezuelan MLB player list is pretty incredible though, so not a bad route to take.

Teams have pulled a lot of scouting resources out of Venezuela due to the country's political instability. There are almost no non-native scouts in Venezuela at the moment. Perhaps the Brewers thought it was a market inefficiency if most teams were unwilling to spend as much time scouting there, to double down on scouting there for themselves?

Makes sense.

Yeah I mean I could see an enterprising 15 year old from, say, Florida move to the Dominican just to avoid the draft.

Read somewhere today that MLB wants to implement an international draft as early as next year.

International draft is difficult. I just don’t see how they give teams picks. Can’t go by record. That would cause tanking to be way to valuable. They essentially get the best domestic & international player. Do you go best to worse record? That doesn’t seem right. Do you have a lottery?

The slot bonus system for signing have helped keep the large market teams from buying all the top guys and made it more competitive all around. Would an international draft really make a big difference now?

I think an International Draft is a necessity. Why not just have 1 draft? If its split, I could see the Innternational side being a lottery for non playoff teams. Even odds. Then add the playoff teams as they lose each round ased on lowest winning percentage.
