So the 5th RD pick gets double the 4th. Someone needs to fire their agent.

So sounds like they were able to go under slot with all the round 2-5 picks. How far over slot are they able to go with Mitchell now? Seems like they should be able to offer him a pretty nice deal at this point considering how far he dropped.

One wonders if the brewers will make up for lost major league season revenue but paying less in draft bonuses. If not they should be able to give him a nice deal and still not pay any tax.

Ah... here we go. From @jimcallisMLB (https://twitter.com/jimcallisMLB/status ... 1279167488):

With all their other @MLBDraft picks signed, @Brewers can pay 1st-rder Garrett Mitchell up to $3,903,300 without exceeding their bonus pool & up to $4,207,215 without exceeding it by more than 5% & losing future picks. Getting him at 20 (slot value = $3,242,900) was a steal.

So that would be the equivalent of the 13th ($4.197M) - 15th ($3.886M) pick slot values. Still possibly a little light for where he could have gone, but at least it's in the right neighborhood.

I don't think Wiemer was a guy who would have been drafted in this condensed draft had he not already tentatively agreed to a way under slot range beforehand. He knew that and he's getting more than he would had he been a UDFA. Not saying Weimer can't adjust but that swing looks like he'll be striking out 40% of the time once he advances past A-ball if he's trying to tap into his power. Cantrelle seems like a much better prospect at this point.

Edit: This assessment is purely opinion based solely off watching video of them hitting. Looks like Wiemer had pretty good K/BB at Cincy. Not much pop for a big guy at this point though. I'd imagine they'll want that to change.

Wiemer could also be converted to a relief pitcher if the bat never really comes around...

Or he's the next Toolshed.

How much leverage does Garrett Mitchell really have? Sure, he could go back to UCLA for his senior season, but with the COVID-19 there may not be a season and he'd re-enter the draft having potentially not played much in two years. Seems to me like he's trying to ensure he gets every last dollar on the table before signing.

Looks like Scott Boras is his agent, so they're almost certainly going for & will probably get just about every last dollar.

Given how much the Brewers have reserved in signing the other picks, I'd be surprised if they didn't have the plan in place all along and knew how much it will take to sign him.

Considering where he was projected to go and who is agent is, I'm surprised they just haven't signed him for the $4,207,215, shake hands, and be done with it. Both sides should be incredibly happy with that deal (Brewers for getting a perceived top 10 guy coming into the draft, Mitchell for getting $4M freaking dollars....)

considering there is no minor league season, unless he would be promised a spot at "summer camp Appleton or Milwaukee", there is no reason for him to sign until the deadline and see how much money he can get from the brewers.

I didn't realize that only 3 first round picks haven't signed yet. I am now kind of surprised its not done. the market has been set.

Hearing the Brewers' deal with Garrett Mitchell is for right around slot, which was $3,242,900. Pending a physical, of course.

I didn’t expect him to sign for slot. Makes me think that perhaps we could’ve been more aggressive in the later rounds.

I'm guessing that means saving $$ was a priority this year.

Yes the Brewers needed to save as much as they can especially with no fans.

By most reports they took a lot of highly rated guys this year. I’m not sure they were expecting to save as much as they did. Certainly Mitchell wasn’t a cost saving decision.
