There are some potentially pretty special performances currently taking place tonight with the Brewers, with Indy and with Huntsville (details soon). The Snappers' performance in their Home Opener, however, does not qualify as "special" in any way.

The Snappers get blanked on three hits.

They allow 14 runs on just seven hits (single runs in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th, 3 runs each in the 5th and 7th, and a 5-spot in the ninth).

Khalid Ballouli takes the loss.

Details later...if we dare.

Oh my, Luis!

The Stars spoiled the opening of the brand new Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville before a Jacksonville team-record crowd of 12,943, the fouth-largest crowd in Southern League history.

Huntsville pitchers, led by LHP Luis Martinez, limited the Suns to three hits, all singles by Mike Collins.

The Stars (now 4-4) scored its run in the fifth inning when Cristian Guerrero doubled home Brandon Gemoll, who doubled earlier in the inning.

The Suns had a baserunner on third base twice in the fourth and fifth innings but a strikeout and a double play ended both Jacksonville threats.

The Suns combined to strike out 14 times against Stars pitching on Friday.

All the details soon, hopefully...

RHP Pascual Coco's pitching was "Coco Crispy" tonight, RHP Jason Childers earned the save.

Each team managed seven hits and played error-free ball, with the Tribe scoring single runs in the first and fifth, including Mark Smith's HR in the fifth.

As with the other games, details later on. Just wanted to post the initial reports while we (hopefully) continue to enjoy the action in Phoenix tonight.

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians (5-3) remain undefeated at home on the 2003 season after shutting out the Charlotte Knights 2-0 at Victory Field Friday night. Pascual Coco and three Tribe relievers combined to limit the Knights (4-3) to just seven hits in front of an exceptional defensive effort.

Coco (1-1), who started and pitched five innings allowing only four hits while striking out three, received credit for the victory, while Jason Childers faced the final four batters to record his first save for Indianapolis.

The Indians defense sparkled throughout the game, beginning in the top of the first inning when center fielder Jason Conti fielded Cliff Brumbaugh's single and promptly threw a strike to catcher Cody McKay to retire the speedy Willie Harris as he attempted to score from second base.

The Tribe then jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Conti led off with a single and was later driven home on Lee Stevens' two-out double. Mark Smith (2-for-2) added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning with a leadoff solo home run, and the Tribe's bullpen took care of the rest.

Danny Kolb, who pitched the sixth and seventh innings, struck out four in his two scoreless innings of relief. David Manning recorded the first two outs in the top of the eighth inning before giving way to Jason Childers with two men on base. Childers needed just one pitch to get out of the jam in the eighth, and then set the Knights down in order in the ninth.

The Indians and Knights continue the three-game series with afternoon games starting at 2:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The expected starters for Charlotte are righties Jon Rauch (1-0) and Felix Diaz (0-0), while righthanders Mark Guerra (0-0) and Jamey Wright (1-1) will pitch for Indianapolis.

Luis Martinez' line after two starts:

Dismiss the fact that I questioned Martinez' continued presence on the 40-man roster all off-season. Toby truly believed and never wavered!

High Desert 3, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 1
Top three farm teams combine to allow one run Friday night -- sweet!

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Dan Hall, Greg Schaub and Bobby Bystrowski teamed up to provide the High Desert Mavericks with their best pitching performance since an Opening Night victory in Lake Elsinore, giving the Mavs a 3-1 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

After the Storm took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Mavs starter Dan Hall settled into a groove, allowing just two hits over the next four innings, on his way to his first career win as a Maverick. Schaub came on in the sixth with the Mavs up 3-1 and worked out of a jam, stranding two runners on base. Schaub left one more on in the seventh, and worked a perfect eighth. Bystrowski came on and retired all three batters he faced in the ninth, getting Marcus Nettles to fly out to left field for his second save of the year.

Jon Benick?s RBI double in the first inning gave the Storm a 1-0 lead. The Mavs would answer with two in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ralph Santana?s sacrifice fly scored Brad Nelson to tie the game at 1-1. Johnny Raburn?s two-out single, drove in Brian Foster for a 2-1 lead. The Mavs added a run in the fourth, when Chris Morris brought home Santana with a ground out.

Nabuaki Yoshida (0-1) took the loss for the Storm with five innings of work, allowing all three earned runs. Hall (1-0) got the win, allowing one earned run on five hits, striking out six in five innings.

Mavs catcher Brian Foster was injured in the seventh inning, when Freddy Guzman?s backswing caught him in the head. Foster needed stitches and was taken to a local hospital after leaving the field under his own power. The late report on Friday night confirms that Foster did not suffer a concussion, only a laceration on the right side of his head. It is unknown how long he will be out.

The Mavs are now 3-5 and just two games back of the 5-3 Storm.

Game two of the series features Mavs lefty Brian Mazone (0-0) against Mike Bumstead (0-0) at 3:05 (5:05 Central) on Saturday afternoon.

High Desert Box Score:
As noted earlier, the success of the converted Beloit bullpen trio of RHP's Chris Saenz, Dan Hall, and Dan Kolb is crucial to the Mavs' success this year -- looks like they may just deal with the tough Cal League conditions as well as can be expected...

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:
David's getting much too creative with his headlines :)

THE STARS AND THE SUNS... BUT NO MOON

The Huntsville Stars evened their record tonight, with a 1-0 victory at Jacksonville's new ballpark, but Stars fans in Huntsville are livid...... Catcher Brian Moon was released Friday afternoon.

Moonie, in his 4th season as a Huntsville Star, was one of the most popular players among fans, who tolerated his sub-Mendoza line hitting every year because he wowed the crowd by snuffing out rallies with his defense. He had simply a deadly throwing arm....... Moon, in his first season with the Stars, threw out 69 of 130 runners attempting to steal --- an incredible 53% rate, where 40% is the standard of excellence....... In 2000, he collared 43%, and last year, 34%........ This season, he nabbed eight runners trying to steal, picked at least one off, while allowing only one stolen base........ He was also a great handler of pitchers, and will probably make a fine coach someday, if he chooses......... He's caught more games than any catcher in Stars history (236) and played in 245 games total --- 16th on the Stars all-time list........

But what I think has caused just as much furor is that the younger brother of the not-too-popular manager is filling Moon's spot on the roster. Don't get me wrong. Kremblas is a nice guy. Personable. Accessible........ But most of the regulars I know at the stadium think he makes some bonehead decisions that cause the team to lose. I'm still burning at one from last year, but I think a lot of the people who come to the stadium don't realize that baseball at this level is more about development than winning games, and in the case of removing Luis Martinez last Saturday while he was pitching a no-hitter, is one example, and it isn't totally fair........ Mike Kremblas was released Thursday by the Class AAA - Sacramento River Cats, the Oakland A's top farm club. Last year, he hit .212, splitting his time between Class AA - Midland (Texas) and Class A - Visalia (California).

Despite the loss of a teammate, it was back to business in Jacksonville, where they opened up The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville (for the lack of a corporate name).......... The opener attracted the 4th largest crowd in the history of the Southern League (the Stars twice had larger crowds in their history), but even though the Stars won, they were treated to, what has appeared to be common, another pitching duel between these two teams......... Small wonder since Jacksonville and Huntsville had the best and 3rd best ERAs in the league in 2002, and weren't doing badly this year........... Since last year, the Suns and the Stars have engaged in three 1-0 games and three 2-1 games. The Stars won all but one of those nail-biters.

The most pleasant surprise of this young season continues to be LHP Luis Martinez, who (I love to point this out again) with improved control pitched 6 innings, giving up just 2 hits, and striking out 9......... That's 20 Ks in 11 innings, with just 2 hits yielded in his two starts.......... Mike Collins collected both of the hits off Martinez tonight --- two singles. By the quirky nature of this new ballpark, his third single, off Derek Lee in the 8th, would have been an easy double at Joe Davis Stadium, but the ball caromed off the wall dividing the stands in right and by luck, in the path of Cristian Guerrero, who is playing dazzling defense so far this season.........

Jacksonville pitcher Heath Totten was just as brilliant, retiring 13 straight batters until Brandon Gemoll broke the ice in the 5th inning with a double to right. With two out, Guerrero's RBI double down the left field line scored Gemoll with the only run of the game. That ended an 0-for-18 slump for Guerrero, who went 2-for-3 on the day --- his first multi-hit day of the season.

The Suns made things interesting. They had a baserunner on third base twice in the 4th and 5th innings, but a strikeout and a double play ended their threats......... Victor Diaz hit the ball on the nose twice, but right at someone --- once to Guerrero and once to Ryan Knox deep to left with two runners on base.......... The Stars had runners on first and second with 0 out in the 8th. Catcher Joel Alvarado, hitless this season, however hit into a 1-5-3 double play trying to move the runners over on a sacrifice. Ryan Gripp struck out to end the threat.

Derek Lee made his 4th appearance of the season and his 120th as a Huntsville Star, placing him one behind the all-time leader -- Mike Maurer.

Mike Jones (0-0, 4.91) will start for the Stars tomorrow in a rematch against Edwin Jackson (0-0, 5.40)........ J.J. Hardy extended his hit streak to 8 games and I'm keeping a watch on this when he starts getting close to the record for the start of a season........ The Stars have committed 14 errors in 8 games. Something else for me to watch....... Mike Adams, after blowing his first two save opportunites on a passed ball and a balk, easily retired the Suns 1-2-3 in the 9th for his first save, and the first save by a Stars pitcher this season.

David takes a look at how the #1 - #9 spots in the lineup have produced thus far on his "Stuff" page:
