UCF pitcher Matulis signs Free-Agent Contract with Milwaukee
By Eric DeSalvo, UCFAthletics.com

ORLANDO -- Left-handed pitcher Chris Matulis was able to give his dad, Michael, a one-of-a-kind Father's Day present. The Boynton Beach native signed a free-agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday following a two-year career at UCF in which he amassed a 12-5 record and 4.02 ERA in 161 innings.

"UCF has definitely helped me grow as a player," Matulis said after signing his contract with the Brewers. "Coach (Terry) Rooney has helped me become the pitcher I am today. He's helped me become more adapt to tough times as far as pitching and learning myself better."

Matulis is the second hurler to sign with an MLB team following the 2013 campaign as RHP Ben Lively inked a deal with the Cincinnati Reds following his selection in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He is also the first Knight to sign a free-agent deal since Nick Cicio in 2011 with the Minnesota Twins.

Overall, Matulis became the 112th player out of UCF to either be drafted or sign a free-agent contract since the program's inception in 1973. He is the 20th Knight to ink a pro deal following the draft for Rooney since he arrived in summer 2008.

After transferring to UCF from LSU in 2010, Matulis sat out the 2011 season due to NCAA rules and Tommy John Surgery on his left elbow. He returned to the bump in 2012 and amassed an unblemished 7-0 record in 20 appearances and 10 starts. In his senior campaign, he served multiple roles for the Knights and eventually settled in as a weekend starter.

In Conference USA play this past season, the 6-foot-6 lefty amassed four starts in which he went eight innings, including a victory at No. 14 Rice back on April 12. He finished the year with a 5-5 record and a 4.31 ERA in 19 appearances and 11 starts.

As per the Brewers' Player Development Dept., two more non-drafted free agents have been signed:

OF Nathan Orf, 5'9", RH bat, 23 years old, senior out of Baylor.

Baylor Site Player Profile Page

Orf signed on Wednesday. He's on Twitter, and enjoyed his Brewers-arranged flight (unsure if it was to Maryvale or Helena).

Orf started all 55 of Baylor’s games and finished with team highs in batting average (.377), hits (81), doubles (15) and on-base percentage (.470).

Also announced as an undrafted signee was Scott Harkin of Sonoma State University, previously with Loyola Marymount, a 6'2" senior, turns 22 on August 6th

ROHNERT PARK, CALIFORNIA -- Sonoma State University senior Scott Harkin will have an opportunity to extend his baseball-playing career as the Walnut Creek native has signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Harkin becomes the second student-athlete off this year's team to head to the minor leagues, following Harmen Sidhu, who was selected by Tampa Bay in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last weekend. Harkin is the 85th SSU baseball student-athlete to sign a professional contract since 1986.

Primarily a shortstop for the Seawolves in his only season at SSU, Harkin will enter the professional ranks as a right-handed pitcher. He made eight appearances on the mound in 2013, all in relief, and went 2-0 with a save, compiling a 2.25 ERA in a total of eight innings of work. He allowed seven hits, two runs and four walks while striking out 13 of the 35 batters he faced.

Offensively, Harkin batted .244 with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs, 22 RBI and 31 runs scored in 56 starts, all at shortstop. On Mar. 9 in a 5-4 win over UC San Diego, Harkin belted a two-run home run in the second inning, then earned the victory on the mound in relief several innings later.

Scott Harkin is the second player in school history to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers; former SSU standout Kevin Wong signed a free agent contract with Milwaukee in 1991. Over the last 27 years, players have been signed out of Sonoma State by 21 of the 30 major league franchises.

Kevin Wong did play in the Pioneer League in '91, but not for an affiliated team, apparently.

To fill one of the two open spots on the AA roster, RHP David Goforth is promoted from Brevard County.

No word quite yet on a Manatee backfill move.

At Wisconsin, 22-year-old catcher Tyler Roberts, the 2009 10th rounder (wow, 5th season already, career stats) will make his season debut as he has been added to the Wisconsin roster (catcher Brent Dean goes on the DL, almost surely as a bullpen catcher / remain with the squad-role rather than an injury).

Roberts was injured last July (right wrist), and missed the remainder of the 2012 campaign. Unsure if that was the same injury he's been rehabbing this spring.

Welcome back to action, Tyler.

Not sure if I am allowed to post transactions in the thread, but if so, here is one I just found:

Wisconsin Transactions:

Clint Coulter activated from DL and transferred to Helena
Brent Dean placed on DL
Tyler Roberts transferred from Extended Spring Training to Wisconsin

I am seeing a Sean Wardour and Tyler Spurlin on the AZL roster. I'm guessing both are UDFA's Chad Thomposon's name is on that roster as well.

It seems Joel Dicent was assigned to the AZL after all. Also, much to my liking, Carlos Belonis is on the AZL roster (though listed as an OF)

Now that I look closer, Belonis is on the 60 day DL. Anyone know anything about that?

And now we know, as RHP Damien Magnifico gets a deserving bump to Brevard County.

No word quite yet on a backfill move for the Timber Rattlers.

Dicent did appear in three DSL games, as recently as 6/14, but yes, thanks for the heads up, like RHP Gian Rizzo, who we're excited to see stateside, both seem to have received the rare early-season bump up from the DSL.

Apparently Narveson was removed from the 40-man roster and outrighted to Nashville... does this belong here?

The Sounds have also noted it may be a few days before Narveson is officially on their minor league roster. When he is, another move needs to happen to free up a spot.

Many of you saw this from Thursday's Link Report:

We will update our transaction thread later this morning, but the overnight-updated roster for the Arizona Rookie League squad reveals some news:

30th round Miami high school SS Luis Aviles has signed.

19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Gian Rizzo has been moved to Maryvale after three 2013 Dominican Summer League appearances and a brilliant stat career line thus far. Sweet!

18-year-old OF Carlos Belonis, considered by many to be the Brewers' top Dominican League prospect, is listed on the 60-day Maryvale DL. Belonis was injured in the 2nd game of this DSL season. We'll work on learning the nature and severity of his injury. It obviously isn't good, a la Orlando Arcia, 2012.

LHP Will West, who split 2012 between Wisconsin and Helena, is on the Maryvale 7-day DL.

RHP Tyler Spurlin out of Rice is an undrafted free agent signee we hadn't mentioned on the board yet. Here's his bio from the Rice site.

OF Yonki Hernandez is back in Maryvale after spending 2012 in Helena.

***

Also, we never did get definitive word on the nature of RHP Chad Thompson's injury with the Timber Rattlers, but as noted above, he's on the Maryvale roster, so hopefully we'll see rehab appearances soon.

Now that the Maryvale roster has been updated, there really aren't a lot of "missing" players from the system. But we'll ask Brewers Player Development to see if they can help us out.

RHP Mike Schaub, 2010 38th round pick out of a California high school, pitched in Helena last season after two seasons in Maryvale. Schaub just turned 21.

LHP Brandol Perez, who never did appear in a game for the Crew in 2012 after his free-agent signing (still a fascinating backstory)

IF Alejandro Mendoza, a three-year DSL veteran, now 21 years old.

Catcher Carlos Pena, another veteran of three DSL seasons. He'll be 21 in September.

Exciting to see Dicent & Rizzo, formerly international men of prospect-status-mystery, bumped stateside!

BA: Have you ever caught? For half a population, you know what he's going through right now.
Rock: Yep, on a bounce, & uh, gets 'im. That shouldn't happen on 4th of July, should it?
BA: No -- speakin' of liberty bell...

Back on the 2nd DSL game of the season on June 2nd, we saw this:

DSL Brewers Top of the 4th
Carlos Belonis strikes out swinging.
Juan Ortiz walks.
Sthervin Matos pops out to first baseman Victor Ovalles in foul territory.
Yunior Santana grounds into a force out, third baseman Francisco Contreras to second baseman Domingo Leyba. Juan Ortiz out at 2nd.

DSL Tigers Bottom of the 4th
Defensive Substitution: Yerald Martinez replaces center fielder Carlos Belonis, batting 1st, playing center field.

The Brewers have confirmed for us that Belonis broke his thumb, and that he is likely out for the season. It's unclear whether the injury occurred on that strikeout, Belonis did handle a fly ball the prior inning.

Quite the similarity to Orlando Arcia's broken ankle in the spring of 2012, in terms of prospectdom and scope. Belonis had just begun a transition from SS to CF.

Via the Brewers -- Schaub released. Perez and Mendoza retired. Pena to the restricted list for failure to report.
