Set your DVR! You'll be able to watch the Brewers boys go for the Arizona Fall League title on MLB Network Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM Central.

Friday's Winter League action.

Venezuela Box Score

From June 15th:

Sounds starting pitcher Mike Fiers seemed to be having a nice 28th birthday Saturday when he entered his fifth start of the season.

But after 6 1⁄3 innings that saw him give up only one run, Fiers gave up a grand slam to Zephyrs infielder Donovan Solano. One out later, a line drive hit Fiers on the right forearm, breaking it.

Pitching for the first time since then --

Zulia Bottom of the 5th

Pitching Change: Mike Fiers replaces Guillermo Moscoso.
Ryan Lollis flies out to right fielder Casper Wells.
Ender Inciarte bunt grounds out, catcher Ramon Cabrera to first baseman Jesus Aguilar.
Freddy Galvis strikes out swinging.

Zulia Bottom of the 6th

Jose Pirela singles on a ground ball to left fielder J. D. Martinez.
Ernesto Mejia homers (6) on a fly ball to left center field. Jose Pirela scores.
Henry Rodriguez strikes out swinging.
Marwin Gonzalez hit by pitch.
Pitching Change: Jonathan Torres replaces Mike Fiers.
With Felix Perez batting, Marwin Gonzalez picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Jonathan Torres to first baseman Jesus Aguilar to shortstop Hernan Perez to first baseman Jesus Aguilar to second baseman Luis Rodriguez.
Felix Perez flies out to right fielder Casper Wells.

So while not perfect, nice to see Mike back in action. Welcome back!

In that same game, RHP Arcenio Leon continued his busy winter season in his homeland with an extended (but eventful) scoreless relief outing:

Caracas Top of the 5th

Pitching Change: Arcenio Leon replaces Elvis Araujo.
Daniel Mayora called out on strikes.
Casper Wells singles on a line drive to left fielder Jose Pirela.
Ramon Cabrera singles on a ground ball to right fielder Ryan Lollis. Casper Wells to 3rd.
Luis Rodriguez grounds into a double play, shortstop Freddy Galvis to second baseman Henry Rodriguez to first baseman Ernesto Mejia. Ramon Cabrera out at 2nd.

Caracas Top of the 6th

Hernan Perez singles on a line drive to left fielder Jose Pirela.
Jesus Galindo walks. Hernan Perez to 2nd.
Alex Gonzalez ground bunts into a force out, pitcher Arcenio Leon to third baseman Marwin Gonzalez. Hernan Perez out at 3rd. Jesus Galindo to 2nd. Alex Gonzalez to 1st.
J. D. Martinez strikes out swinging.
Jesus Aguilar flies out to right fielder Ryan Lollis.

Caracas Top of the 7th

Daniel Mayora lines out to right fielder Ryan Lollis.
Casper Wells grounds out, shortstop Freddy Galvis to first baseman Ernesto Mejia.
Ramon Cabrera singles on a line drive to right fielder Ryan Lollis.
Pitching Change: Jose Guanchez replaces Arcenio Leon.
Luis Rodriguez grounds into a force out, fielded by shortstop Freddy Galvis. Ramon Cabrera out at 2nd.

***

Puerto Rico Box Score

Martin Maldonado started at first base, later moved behind the plate -- 0-for-3 with three K's, and another HBP (2nd in two games). Maldy now 1-for-5 with all four outs via the K.

Maldonado's teammate RHP Hiram Burgos had an amazing line -- one IP, two hits allowed (including a double), three walks, yet did not allow a run, see and believe:

Santurce Top of the 5th

Pitching Change: Hiram Burgos replaces Alex De La Cruz.
Edwin Maysonet doubles (2) on a line drive to center fielder Michael Taylor.
Neftali Soto singles on a ground ball to left fielder Daniel Ortiz. Edwin Maysonet to 3rd.
Jonathan Singleton called out on strikes.
With Austin Wates batting, wild pitch by Hiram Burgos, Neftali Soto to 2nd.
Edwin Maysonet out at home, catcher Rene Rivera to pitcher Hiram Burgos.
Austin Wates walks.
Luis Matos walks. Neftali Soto to 3rd. Austin Wates to 2nd.
Jonathan Rodriguez strikes out swinging.

Santurce Top of the 6th

Christian Vazquez walks.
Pitching Change: Sam Runion replaces Hiram Burgos.
Jack Lopez pops out to second baseman Luis Figueroa.
Billy Hamilton called out on strikes.
Edwin Maysonet singles on a line drive to left fielder Daniel Ortiz. Christian Vazquez to 2nd.
Neftali Soto singles on a line drive to right fielder Jerry Sands. Christian Vazquez to 3rd. Edwin Maysonet to 2nd.
Pitching Change: Hector Hernandez replaces Sam Runion.
Jonathan Singleton strikes out swinging.

***

Dominican Box Score

Juan Francisco, batting cleanup and playing third base (cleanly), 1-for-4 with an RBI (two K's). Francisco now hitting .310 with 13 walks and 23 K's in 87 AB's.

***

Dominican Box Score

SS Hector Gomez 1-for-4 with a run scored (one K), having a hacktastic winter (.278 with one walk in 54 AB's).

***

Blast from the past -- Remember LHP Steve Hammond, the Brewers 6th round pick in 2005 who, along with OF Darren Ford, was traded to the Giants for Ray Durham during the '08 playoff charge? Released by the Giants after the '09 season, Hammond pitched in the independent Atlantic League in 2010 and part of 2011, before making his way to a semi-pro league in Japan, the Ishikawa Million Stars. He's starting games in Mexico this winter, you can follow him on Twitter here.

Saturday's Winter League action --

Actually, first we catch up from Friday, in this box score from the Dominican, new waiver claim via the Dodgers utilityman Elian Herrera made his winter debut, leading of at second base, 0-for-4 with two K's.

***

Just because it's the Cubs -- their 40-man roster waiver claim project via Boston, Daniel Bard, walked all five men he faced in Puerto Rico Saturday, and added three wild pitches, has faced 11 batters this winter, one out, one reached on error, nine walks. Kind of sad, actually, to see a career obliterate like that (Steve Blass). Final score was 22-9. Bard's team won. Not a good start for former Brewers LHP Bobby Bramhall (box).

***

Puerto Rico Box Score

Catcher Martin Maldonado 0-for-2, now 1-for-7 on the young season. He did throw out the lone baserunner who challenged him. Maldonado grounded out in the 6th, and did not return for the 7th. His team was down 5-0, so as of yet, no concern about injury, but something to keep an eye on.

***

Dominican Box Score

Juan Francisco was 0-for-4 with one K, playing third base and batting cleanup, to drop to .297 after 91 AB's.

We have another Brewers winter debut, as teammate RHP Alfredo Figaro tossed a scoreless but busy inning --

Escogido Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Alfredo Figaro replaces Maximo Nelson.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Julio Lugo replaces Fernando Martinez.
Julio Lugo walks.
Eury Perez strikes out swinging.
Jorge Polanco singles on a ground ball to left fielder Julio Borbon. Julio Lugo to 2nd.
James McCann grounds into a double play, second baseman Carlos Triunfel to shortstop Jurickson Profar to first baseman Chris Marrero. Jorge Polanco out at 2nd.

***

Dominican Box Score

Elian Herrera again played second base and batted leadoff, this time 1-for-4 (one K) with a run scored.

SS Hector Gomez was 2-for-4 with a run scored (.293 after 58 AB's, only one walk). Gomez did commit an error, his 3rd.

As their friend Brewers farmhand RHP Seth Harvey tweeted, congrats to the Brewers Fall League men on their championship (2-0 win, box score), including Twitter-less Taylor Jungmann. If you click on those account names in the tweet, you'll see some excited and happy photos and posts.

Hope you got a chance to see or DVR the game, here's Tyler Cravy's two scoreless and David Goforth's one for the save. (On a side note, Goforth's facial hair trumps Cravy's, but worthy effort by Tyler, too.)

Mesa Top of the 4th

Pitching Change: Tyler Cravy replaces Eduardo Rodriguez.
Devon Travis singles on a ground ball to left fielder Henry Urrutia.
Kris Bryant called out on strikes.
With C. J. Cron batting, Devon Travis caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Jorge Alfaro to second baseman Mookie Betts.
C. J. Cron flies out to center fielder Tyler Naquin.

Mesa Top of the 5th

Steven Souza Jr lines out sharply to left fielder Henry Urrutia.
Taylor Lindsey strikes out swinging.
Jorge Soler lines out to left fielder Henry Urrutia.

Mesa Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: David Goforth replaces Keone Kela.
Kris Bryant flies out to left fielder Henry Urrutia.
C. J. Cron flies out to center fielder Tyler Naquin.
Steven Souza Jr called out on strikes.

Quiet game for RF Mitch Haniger, batting 5th, 0-for-3 (two K's - no favor from the home plate ump on one called strike three).

Cravy's stint was marred by a visitor in the booth in his first inning (eye vision specialist), and his 2nd inning was so quick there was no time for specific commentary on him.

Goforth was throwing gas, but oddly the broadcast did not include radar readings (neither did Gameday).

2013 Timber Rattlers LHP Mike Strong turns 25 today, and power-hitting Maryvale first baseman David Denson finally turns 18.

They share a birthday with this Ryan Braun guy, who turns 30.

Good day to all.

All Brewers activity took place in the Dominican Sunday, and it was relatively quiet --

Dominican Box Score

Robinzon Diaz 1-for-5 with two RBI (two K's) - he split time at first base and behind the plate, one baserunner stole third base vs. him. Diaz (.218) now with just two walks in 78 AB's.

***

Dominican Box Score

Juan Francisco is slumping -- 0-for-4 with two K's, his 7th error (he played third base). Francisco (.284 overall) now 2-for-23 with 11 K's (three BB's) in his last seven games.

Side note for prospective employers -- Chris Narveson continues to have a stellar winter as a starting pitcher.

***

Dominican Box Score

SS Hector Gomez 0-for-4 with an error, his 4th in 20 games this winter.

Elian Herrera played second base, was 0-for-4 with an RBI and one K.

As per this google-translated blog post out of the Dominican, we learn more about Sean Halton's departure after 15 productive games --

Sean Halton said goodbye Licey

The whole of the Licey Tigers announced the departure to the United States imported player Sean Halton, with the possibility of return to the team in December.

Manny Acta, general manager of the Licey, said Halton gave an example of professionalism, having been playing injured leg and decided to leave the United States for recovery and left open the possibility of returning in December.

The player belonging to the Milwaukee Brewers has proved one of the best imports from the Dominican Winter League this season and one of the best of the Tigers in recent years.

In 15 games chartered 17 hits in 52 innings, .327, eighth best hitter in the circuit. He hit eight doubles (one behind leader Juan Francisco), a homer, 12 RBI (fourth best), seven runs, five walks, 11 strikeouts, .410 on-base percentage and .948 OPS.

Image

***

With Halton indicating he may be back, it would seem whatever's ailing his leg is relatively minor.

Winter League Activity - Tuesday 11/19

Dominican Box Score

Juan Francisco, batting cleanup and playing first base, singled twice and drove in a run in six at-bats (13-inning game), batting .287 after 101 at-bats (13 walks). That's reasonable.

Francisco also did this in his other four at-bats -

Juan Francisco strikes out swinging.
Juan Francisco strikes out swinging.
Juan Francisco strikes out swinging.
Juan Francisco strikes out swinging.

That's 30 strikeouts in 101 AB's against the equivalent of, let's say to be kind, AAA pitching.

Meanwhile, an old friend about to turn 38 has posted a 1.449 OPS after 11 games in Mexico.

Russell the Muscle. Same number of walks as Francisco in 65 fewer AB's (36 AB's).

If it could only be one or the other, who would you rather see facing right-handed pitching in a platoon/bench role, in person at Miller Park, or all season on TV, in 2014? Please, Brewers, please.

Newest Brewer Elian Herrera had a big game, 4-for-6 (all singles, two K's). He played LF in this one.

***

In that same game, RHP Alfredo Figaro was dealing, fanning five in three scoreles innings --

Estrellas Bottom of the 7th

Pitching Change: Alfredo Figaro replaces Greg Aquino.
Alex Valdez strikes out swinging.
Junior Lake singles on a line drive to center fielder Yordany Ramirez.
Audy Ciriaco singles on a line drive to center fielder Yordany Ramirez. Junior Lake to 2nd.
With Ed Rogers batting, Junior Lake caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Christian Bethancourt to third baseman Juan Francisco, Audy Ciriaco to 2nd.
Ed Rogers flies out to left fielder Julio Borbon.

Estrellas Bottom of the 8th

Jackson Williams strikes out swinging.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Nelson Perez replaces Brian Barden.
Nelson Perez grounds out, shortstop Wilson Valdez to first baseman Yamaico Navarro.
Michael Martinez called out on strikes.

Estrellas Bottom of the 9th

Elian Herrera strikes out swinging.
Denis Phipps grounds out, third baseman Juan Francisco to first baseman Yamaico Navarro.
Alex Valdez strikes out swinging.

***

Dominican Box Score

SS Hector Gomez 0-for-3 (two K's), his 5th error in 21 games.

***

LHP Zach Kroenke made his first Dominican start Tuesday, the Brewers made him an offer to return in 2014, but thus far, Kroenke did not accept the deal.

Adam McCalvy (via Gord Ash) explains Hunter Morris' abbreviated winter season in his 40-man article:

Officially, Morris is one of the Brewers' 2014 options for first base, a position that is at the moment unfilled.

"It's going to depend what the need is at the time," said assistant general manager Gord Ash, who referred to Morris' Triple-A season as a learning experience.

"I think he understood there are adjustments to be made," Ash said. "I think he made good progress defensively. Obviously, he still hit with decent power, but he didn't have some of the peripherals that surrounded that like he did the year before. So it was a good learning experience for him, and I was hopeful that winter ball would allow him to take that next step."

But Morris suffered a twisted right knee after three games in the Venezuelan Winter League and was unable to play after Nov. 8. When the issue did not improve, the Brewers brought Morris home to the U.S. for an examination on Tuesday by head team physician William Raasch, who detected no structural damage.

Wednesday's Winter League action --

Puerto Rico Box Score

RHP Hiram Burgos made a very strong scoreless three-inning start (one H, one BB, four K's). Only one run allowed in seven innings over four appearances for Burgos thus far. Burgos may be a bit of a forgotten man in fans' discussions of big league-capable pieces, but when he's healthy and on, he's proven to be tantalizingly interesting.

Ponce Top of the 1st

Reymond Fuentes strikes out swinging.
Ivan De Jesus called out on strikes.
Rubi Silva strikes out swinging.

Ponce Top of the 2nd

Jordan Lennerton grounds out, third baseman Chris Curley to first baseman Kennys Vargas.

Kevin Torres flies out to center fielder Michael Taylor.

Ponce Top of the 3rd

Guillermo Quiroz flies out to left fielder Daniel Mayora.
Jose Martinez grounds out, second baseman Hernan Perez to first baseman Jesus Aguilar.

***

Mexico Box Score

The Brewers finally have a Mexican League representative, as native son catcher Rafael Neda (.488 2013 OPS in 143 Brevard AB's) made his debut. Entering the game in the 5th inning, Neda finished 0-for-3 (two K's).

***

Dominican Box Score

SS Hector Gomez (.261, one BB in 69 AB's) singled and drove in a run in four AB's.

***

Dominican Box Score

Switch-hitting 40-man roster waiver claim Elian Herrera, leading off and playing LF here, singled in four AB's, scored a run, added a sacrifice bunt.

Finally, isn't this in a way a good thing that's happening (below)? Front office reality check?

Juan Francisco, playing third base and batting cleanup, was 0-for-4 with two K's.

Down to .276 after 105 AB's, Francisco has now fanned 36 times. He is 4-for-his-last-36 with 17 K's.

Former Brewer and current minor league free agent RHP Mark Rogers made his winter league debut in Venezuela Sunday, and he pitched a hitless first inning, walking one. Unfortunately he walked the first three batters he faced in the 2nd inning, left the game, and his successor allowed all three inherited runners to score.

Box Score / Recap

Certainly for all his promise, we certainly saw many similar outings through the years.

The Brewers indicated that Rogers would get work in at their own Dominican Academy, and if possible and a spot opened up, try to get Rogers on a formal Dominican Winter league squad. As of this time, that has not occurred, at least not in a formal game.

would be huge to get Burgos and Fiers back as options for the rotation/pen. I've got my fingers crossed

I have faith in Burgos. I'm convinced he was injured in that 3 inning stint where he was left in to allow 12 runs (10 earned) in 3 innings. That wasn't the same guy that dominated hitters in the WBC.
